Microplate reader
Microplate reader is commonly used for sample assays in microtiter plates with 6-1536 wells. Some detection modes include absorbance, fluorescence intensity, luminescence, time-resolved fluorescence, and fluorescence polarization. Microplate reader can be classified into two subcategories, multi-mode with multiple detection modes, and single-mode with only one detection mode.
Table. Microplate reader detection modes
| Detection mode | Application range | Mechanism |
| Absorbance | low | Light absorbance by sample. Light source and detector required |
| Fluorescence intensity | high | Use excitation source to illuminate samples. Sample emits fluorescence. Light source and detector required |
| Luminescence or chemiluminescence | high | Sample emits fluorescence due to reaction. Detector required |
| Time-resolved fluorescence | high | Pulse excite lanthanides fluorescent molecule to decrease background. Light source and detector required |
| Fluorescence polarization | high | Use polarized light to excite sample. Light source and detector required. |
Microplate reader’s applications include high-throughput screening for drug discovery, proteomics, genomics, cell based assays, ELISA and Immunoassays, enzyme assays etc.
