Microplate reader

Microplate reader is commonly used for sample assays in microtiter plates with 6-1536 wells. Some detection modes include absorbance, fluorescence intensity, luminescence, time-resolved fluorescence, and fluorescence polarization. Microplate reader can be classified into two subcategories, multi-mode with multiple detection modes, and single-mode with only one detection mode.

Table. Microplate reader detection modes

Detection mode Application range Mechanism
Absorbance low Light absorbance by sample. Light source and detector required
Fluorescence intensity high Use excitation source to illuminate samples. Sample emits fluorescence. Light source and detector required
Luminescence or chemiluminescence high Sample emits fluorescence due to reaction. Detector required
Time-resolved fluorescence high Pulse excite lanthanides fluorescent molecule to decrease background. Light source and detector required
Fluorescence polarization high Use polarized light to excite sample. Light source and detector required.

Microplate reader’s applications include high-throughput screening for drug discovery, proteomics, genomics, cell based assays, ELISA and Immunoassays, enzyme assays etc.
