Enzyme was first discovered by French chemist Anselme Payen in 1833. But it took a long time for the biochemical identity of enzymes. The conclusion that pure proteins can be enzymes was definitively demonstrated by John Howard Northrop and Wendell Meredith Stanley, who worked on the digestive enzymes pepsin (1930), trypsin and chymotrypsin. These three scientists were awarded the 1946 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Enzymes have been used for such a long time, and they are more and more popular. And the use of enzymes is almost without limits. Enzymes can be the tools of nature. They cut and paste products and speed up all vital biological process; Enzymes are also the warehouse of the body. When we eat, enzymes help the body to break down the food into tiny particles which can be converted into energy in the body.

Enzymes as drugs have two important features that distinguish them from all other types of drug. First, enzymes often bind and act on their targets with great affinity and specificity. Second, enzymes are catalytic and convert multiple target molecules to the desired products. These two features make enzymes specific and potent drugs that can accomplish therapeutic biochemistry in the body that small molecules cannot. These characteristics have resulted in the development of many enzyme drugs for a wide range of disorders.

Enzymes can speed up chemical reaction in living organisms. They come in all shapes and forms and catalyze all biological process, including protein synthesis and degradation, metabolic reactions, DNA synthesis and degradation, etc. and enzymes are prime drug target in the pharmaceutical industry, because enzymes are usually overactive and are relatively easy targets for small molecule inhibitor discovery.
