The best northern plant for bio diesel oil material-- Shinyleaf Yellowhorn
Shinyleaf Yellowhorn(Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge) belongs to sapindaceae¡¯s family, is a rare species for oil in China. It has huge potential for producing bio diesel oil. It has been listed as one of the top eight species of trees for bio diesel oil. Shinyleaf Yellowhorn can live for hundreds years. The tree is about 15 to 20 feet in height, spread is approximately 2/3rds the height, with brown bark. Foliage - Alternate, pinnate, 6"-8" in length with an odd number of leaflets. Leaflets are approximately 2" to 2 1/2" in length. Fall color is a dingy yellow. Flowers are clustered in panicles on the terminal ends of branches and lateral branches. Individual flowers are white, roughly 1" across. The throat is initially yellow, turning to a carmine red. Flowering occurs in early to middle April and lasts for about 10 days. Fruit is a 3 valve capsule containing 3 dark brown pea sized seeds, with 4¡ª8cm in length. Fruits will mature in July or August. Shinyleaf Yellowhorn is a native species in Northern China; it is now planted in large area of China from 33 to 46 degrees north latitudes, 100 to 125degrees East longitudes, Especially, in south part of Hei Long Jiang province, Jin Lin Province and Ning Xia Province where the yearly rainfall is only 148.2mm. Shinyleaf Yellowhorn can be able to adapt to many soil conditions. It can be grown in the dry area with an annual rainfall 250 mm; or in mountainous area, loessial foothill or even the place where the ground water table below 2 meters. Shinyleaf Yellowhorn prefers sunlight, loamy soils with adequate moisture, tolerant of calcareous soils, will not tolerate wet soils. It can fruit early, generally speaking, after the seedling plantation, it will be flowering in the second year, and the fruiting rate after five years will be 95%. Shinyleaf Yellowhorn is not only a kind of plant for oil, but also can plant on the bald hills, conserve the soil and water, preventing the desert or just plant as ornamentals. The flowers of this plant is very beautiful and also a very important resource for honey. The root of this tree appears yellow, which is a very good material for dye industry. Its seed capsule and leaves can be used for medicine. Its pericarp contains 12.2% furfural; it is a good material for producing furfural. The oil of its seed can be used for food or other industries.
