Southern blot background problem

I am analyzing the results from several SBlots and I see a very strange result that I have not come across before... The DNA lanes come out white and the space between the lanes is black (i.e. it looks like a photograph negative!). I suspect this to be a solution problem but am not sure if it pre- or post hybridization. Has anyone ever seen this affect before?
