poor growth of E. coli and lousy plasmid DNA yield

Starting a culture from a frozen glycerol stock or from a freshly streaked plate, I've been having a problem that the culture grows very poorly overnight. And then of course I get a lousy yield of plasmid. This is happening with 7 different plasmids (mutations of the same gene). What's going on?
