    SDS PAGE dye front

Hi, I've been doing some SDS PAGEs and I'm kinda new at this. I've heard that I can let the dye front run off so that I can let the bands run longer (and therefore gain better resolution - I had a problem with very close clustering of bands). But I've now realized that I can't use relative mobility to calculate molecular weights anymore. I was wondering if there's an alternate way to calculate molecular weights. I've come across 1 site that says an arbitrary reference point can be used for setting up the standard curve, if the lanes were quite even. Any comments? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Use a reference marker
