    formamide in buffer?

    Dear all,
Can anyone tell me why the use of formamide in wash buffers is necessary? After hybridization in 50% formamide at 37 degrees, wouldn't it be fine to wash at 60 degrees in 2xSSC or .6 x SSC or wahtever is best for your favourite probe? I see instead that most literature describes washing in 50% formamide and therefore at lower temperaturs. Difference RNA-DNA probes??
    thanks
