Low molecular weight hydrophobic protein

I'm working on anovel protein that has a low molecular weight. When i run lysate on a 15% SDS-PAGE gel and probe with an antibody generated to a peptide sequence in the novel protein i get a very diffuse/smeared band (sometimes it even looks like two bands very close to each other). Anyone have any ideas about whats happening? I haven't looked at any post-translational modification because i don't really know what to look for.
