In my opinion, this is the best book on general principles without going into detail on specific therapeutic areas. I would consider it a must-read for those in clinical pharmacology post-graduate training or those working in clin pharm. However, previous knowledge of pharmacology is needed, as this book is not suitable as a first primer for medical and undergrad students.

In my opinion, this is the best book I have come acrorss in terms of "PRINCIPLES" The book focuses on general principles, not specific therapeutic areas. Topics covered range from drug discovery and development to individualization and quality assessment of drug therapy. This is an excellent resource for those in post-graduate Clinical Pharmacology training or who are working in this area. Readers will,
however, need a basic knowledge of pharmacology as this book is not suitable as the first and only Clinical Pharmacology textbook for medical or undergraduate students.

As a student, I found this book extremely helpful. It removes a great deal of confusion, enabling the reader to truly understand the concepts. I found this very helpful. I liked the fact that there were quizzes at the end of each chapter (great for review or just to get key points) and a final exam at the end.

I bought the book with the intent to fill in gaps in my knowledge. When I recieved the book a few weeks ago, I glanced at it for ten minutes and noticed many spelling errors and what I consider to be a couple serious content errors. For example: On page 283, the phrase "fight or flight" has been split by the author to describe both sympathetic (fight) and parasympathic (flight) responses, (the author does indicate that this isn't entirely sensible). However, the physiologist, Walter Cannon, coined the phrase "fight or flight" in the early 1900's to describe just the sympathetic response of the autonomic nervous system (your body is stimulated to deal with danger -- to fight or run away). Likewise the phrase "Rest and Repose" can describe the parasympathetic response. If I had been unaware of this basic physiology this book would have confused me about the basic understanding of the autonomic nervous system.

Because I found content error in the information I do feel I know, I am hesitant to trust the content of the book which would be new to me.

This book is awesome! It has provided me with so much knowledge of drug uses, interactions, reactions... etc. Working in a vet's office this book has been a great help to me. It talks at the veterinary technicians level, as opposed to reading a lot of information that just goes right over your head. It is geared from the nurses point of view and is organized into easy to find categories, with all the similar drugs listed near it, along with possible interactions/reactions. A must have for the vet tech!

I found this book very helpful for me while I was in school and while in practice. The only thing that I had a little trouble with is cross referencing the trade names of the drugs with what was listed in the appendendix. Otherwise it is an excellent book!

If you take the practice certification exam, available online at the website of the organization that administers the real test, you will find that most of the questions are not answered in this or rhe other Ballington books. They manage to be long and packed with irrelevant information without including the things you will actually need to know to get certified. Look somewhere else.

I'm not satisified with the purchase of this book because there are no answers to the chapter review questions.

The new (2nd) edition is a nice update of the original text. It now includes review questions as well as new drug information since the first edition. The text itself is admirably clear and concise, and does a good job of describing the clinical uses of drugs as well as their mechanisms of action. This would be an excellent textbook for an introductory pharmacology course.

I found this book to be a great up to date (2000) review of pharm. It has just a bit more information than a pure review book, like the lippincott's pharm rewiew. The extra info helps put the drugs more in context to why they work or don't. It does not have questions to test yourself, the questions come in another "companion" book to this, so there is extra expence if one wants that- the only down side (lippincott's has questions in the same book). The class that I'm in is pretty much split on which one they prefer (the questions in the lippincott book sway some).
