I have taken well over 200 hours of college course work, most which are in the sciences -- this is by far the worst text book I've ever owned. It's rife with errors and inconsistencies. It has no supplemental resources for the student. The figures and illustrations are often unclear or incorrect; more often than not, they do NOT help the reader understand the concept. The "bold word" notion was obviously lost on the authors. All too often, seemingly "key" words will be in bold, but the authors fail to define them anywhere in the text. The index and glossary are far too limited in breadth and depth. The supplied presentation slides and test questions fail in many of the same ways as the book. <br /> <br />Printing quality can also be called into question. The book has only three colors: black, blue, and white. The detail required to understand what's going on in histology slides and micrographs just isn't there. <br /> <br />IF YOU ARE A PROFESSOR/INSTRUCTOR I URGE YOU CONSIDER OTHER HIGHER QUALITY TEXTS. <br /> <br />Clinical immunology is complicated enough; don't make it worse by supplying students with error-filled, typo-ridden texts.

This book, written in a beautiful, almost poetic prose, is engrossing, informative, and covered commonalities of the immune system, human behavior, genetics, family relations, faith, reason and science. I particularly liked the parallels between paranoia and immune system. In paranoia, the mind views almost everything as a threat, and may even inflict damage on innocent parties. In the latter the body attacks itself and other non-threats, causing injury to itself. Also, the details on how the immune system "remembers" and how the various organs police the system was fascinating. Not all of the personal family story snippets tied strongly to the central theme, but all were excellent writing and emotionally powerful. Anyone wanting to expand their horizons and view the world from a unique viewpoint could do well to read Callahan's fine book.

I didn't know a darn thing about the immune system, and it wasn't high on my list of must-research material, but this book is the best one I've read this year. What an amazing book! Absolutely fascinating -- and not just for science minded folks.

Callahan is that genre of author I like to describe as "scientifically based mystic." Scientist in that, true to his craft, he primarily uses the scientific method to probe the answers to life in the biological sense. Mystic in that he recognizes that science can provide many wonderful answers and statistics, but seldom the "meta" answers man has yearned for since we can remember. <br /> <br />"Who am I?" and "What is my place in the universe?" are questions seldom answered satisfactorily by science, and more comfortably by religion. Using his considerable experience and knowledge in the science of immunology, Callahan tackles these questions in a much different way then most scientists would, yet without an appeal to religiosity. Always with a healthy respect for the unknown, unseen and unknowable, Callahan deftly explores the hidden relationships between ourselvs, our parents and every other living thing comprising life. <br /> <br />He'll make you think in ways you possibly haven't thought before, and even tug at your heartstrings while recounting intensly personal stories experienced by us all. Highly recommended.

Stedman's Dermatology and Immunology Words is once again in the Stedman category of excellent medical reference books. This extremely handy book, ideal for the medical transcriptionist who deals with dermatology, allergy, rheumatology, and infectious diseases, including those in the HIV-related area, will not go wrong with this volume. In addition to the aforementioned specialty categories, it also includes diagnostic procedures, lab tests, equipment/instruments and even prosthesis terms in the involved specialties. It is fully cross-referenced which is extremely handy when you know the dictator is saying, for example, some kind of "acne", but cannot clearly hear or are not totally acquainted with his/her statement such as "varioliformis acne" as one example. Additionally, there are several indexes that include appropriate anatomical illustrated guides, a list of commonly used word combination forms [viz, "chondro = cartilage, etc.], and, very handy, an extensive list of common allergens.<p>The editor claims this book has 41,000 entries which also include abbreviations and acronyms. The medical transcriptionist, who especially deals with dermatology/allergy, cannot go wrong with this reference book. As a medical transcriptionist, I rate it tops.

THIS BOOK MADE ME THE BEST STUDENT IN MY CLASS, TRUST ME IT WAS NOT ME IT WAS THANKS TO THIS BOOK. ITS USER-FRIENDLY FORMAT MAKES BE VERY MOTIVATED AND FOCUS. ITS CONCISE STYLE HELP TO COVER A LOT OF FIELDS IN FEW HOURS AND TRUST ME STILL YEARS LATER YOU REMEMBER WHAT YOU LEARNED. IT GETS TO THE POINT IN A LIGHT WAY.

I used this book primarily during my microbiology course. I did reference it while I studied for Step 1 also. The end of this book that contains "Summary of Medically Important Bacteria/Virus/Fungi/Parasites" is a great resource to have. Get this one early and read it, then reference it as needed for your board prep.

Warren Levinson is a genius! This book is absolutely brilliant. I would recommend it to almost anybody who doesn't like dumbed down books like Lippincott. Levinson's Microbiology is clear and comprehensive. It tells you exactly what to focus on, and cuts out extraneous details. The immunology section is even better! You'll love this book. The questions are even fantastic in helping you remember all the bugs, and the quick summary reviews at the end make this book worth your while. One recommendation for the next edition is to add more clinically relative laboratory perspectives. Make tables and keep reviewing until the day boards comes.

I bought this book because it was needed in my course. But if you are new to the COMPLEX world of Immunology, then beware! If you want to get the full use of the depth of this book, first read the subject in THE GREATEST BOOK FOR NEWBIES in Immunology, I mean by "IMMUNOBIOLOGY" by Charles Janeway. Then you can skip to Parslow-Stites and be prepared for the test. If you already have concepts in this subject, then go for it, you will not be dissapointed.

Stites manages to explain a really complicated subject with simplicity. Enjoyful to read and easy to learn from.
