| Excellent book to be used as both a text and review source. Icons on the side of pages tend to be more distracting than helpful. |

By: Douglas F. Paulsen ISBN: 0071476652 Publisher: McGraw-Hill Companies Release Date: 15 May, 2008 Bioscience book rank:
| I bought both this book and BRS Cell Biology and Histology for review and used them mainly as a source for practice questions. I found that the questions in this book is much better and more challenging than those in the BRS book.
This seller did a very good job. The service was speedy, the book was well protected and in good condition as described. I will purchase other bookers from this seller and reccommend others to do so.
The decision to buy this book is one of the most apt I have ever made in the medical school. Paulsen gives the rather abstract histology a vivid approach, that engulfs just what is required.
However , illustrations are lacking and because of its compactness, no sentence is to be ignored. Consequently , progress is not very significant and thus inappropriate to rush through the day before the exam. |

| This book is a "must have" for those in university
or professional school. It presents information,
both in summary and table forms. The student is,
thus, able to compare and contrast information,
making test-taking much easier |

| A few years ago, I was drawn to this book for its quick and easy, Q&A style, while helping a more senior friend study for his General Surgery Boards.

It quickly became apparently to both of us (including myself, a mid-level resident at the time, without a full fund of knowledge), that this book was so full of errors that it is practically unusable. Although in this day and age of spell-checkers, I am stymied by the number of grammatical and spelling errors, I can get past those. It is the glaring factual errors which make this book untrustworthy. Many of them are simple, easy to understand concepts which are not in contention; these are not controversial issues and therefore these errors are unforgiveable. For this to happen in a second edition, is seemingly unprofessional and inappropriate.

Since I am acquainted with many of the faculty who wrote the chapters in this text, I spoke with them about it. All agreed that the questions I marked as errors were indeed wrong and had little to say about how they appeared in the book (ie, they generally insisted that that was not the answer they gave to the question). Its a mystery if the authors themselves claim not to have given the answers contained in the text.

It would not be farfetched for me to say that every page of this text contains some sort of error - spelling, grammar, references or actual factual inconsistencies. Do not waste your money on this text. I'd rate it a "0" if I could. |

| As an international medical graduate I used the Board Simulator in my preparation for USMLE step 1, found it very helpful. The questions are rather tough, the explanations to the answers are thorough and promote logical thinging. It is a comprehensive review. Great for training and learning at the same time, althoug may be time consuming. I went through it all and was scared to score only 75% in average. I though I would barely pass the USMLE. To my surprise, the questions on the USMLE were about one level easier and I scored 99 on the Step 1. From my experience I give high recomendations to the Board Simulator in USMLE Step 1 preparation.
I used Board simulator on a regular basis, to check my preparation for the step 1. I helped me get 95 without a sweat. I gives a realistic picture of where you stand. If your are at the 70% mark, you are sure to get in the 90s in the Usmle. I shows your weaker areas both subjectwise and topicwise, so it is better than the paperback edition. Overall the most important material for step 1 preparation.
The quality of question is superior and explanations very accurate. But coming out of USMLE exam one wonders if there could have been better way to spend your time.First Aid rated this book as an 'A'when it came out but later downgraded it to 'B'.The style is definitely very different from USMLE. The clinical vignette questions in step1 are straight forward classic presentations of disease which are not very hard to recognize specially if you have paid attention to them when readng the review books and Underground clinical Vignette series. Some of these disease patterns are frequently tested. This book does nothing to reinforce them. Instead it presents some scenarios recquiring clilnical judgement near step2 level. The non vignette question are also very difficult. Its hard to answer them after studying review books that are enough for step1.So how is the book useful?
it chooses the right content even if the difficulty level is high. if you have the TIME to read the explanations it is useful.you dont need to learn everything in the explanations.just the points that look most important.after solving these questions you feel more confident and the vast number of questions help strengthen your basics. I started with 50% and but i went on to get a very good score.may be doing 1 or 2 tests from each book is enough. |
