I was very excited when this book arrived in my mailbox a few days ago (I ordered via Amazon Marketplace for a grand total of about $5.00). Not only does it surpass BRS Physiology (Board Review Series) in my humble opinion, it can stand alone as a complete physiology text. Even though it is written in outline form, no details are spared-- the author provides a thorough and complete treatise of medical physiology. This book accomplishes quite a lot considering its small size: its ideal for two semester physiology courses, medical students, USMLE preparation, and reference. There are tons of clear, simple illustrations, figures and tables and the information is presented in a sensible and well-organized format with nice short chapters (as it should be!) At the conclusion of each chapter, there are one or more guided case studies which provide clinical applications to the preceding information. If you are considering purchasing either: BRS Physiology (Board Review Series), USMLE Road Map: Physiology (Usmle Road Map), or Physiology Third Edition With [...] Access I suggest you give this text some attention, as it may very well be your top choice (It was for me!)

A good book. I had it but it was lost during moving. So i bought anpther one from amazon~

This book has just the right amount of detail for course review, and it has a good, logically arranged layout. It's like an ideal set of class notes.

Product Description

Published in 1825 after some three decades of consuming research, The Physiology of Taste is the most famous book ever written about food. It remains among the most comprehensive, stimulating, and just plain enjoyable works ever published on the subject of the senses and their pleasures. In a work spiced with style and wisdom, Brillat-Savarin declares that "Animals feed themselves; men eat; but only wise men know the art of eating." M.F.K. Fisher's translation of Brillat-Savarin's masterpiece, originally published in 1825, is a true marriage of minds and sensibilities, a classic against which all subsequent gastronomical writing must be measured. Published in 1825 after some three decades of consuming research, The Physiology of Taste is the most famous book ever written about food. Witty and elegant, it is a classic in the grandest sense. Brillat-Savarin set out to write about food and cookery, but his interests and enthusiasms ranged so widely over matters of the human spirit that they could hardly be contained, and his work-here in its greatest translation-sits on the shelf of masterpieces of world literature. Its treasures include: observations on feasting and fasting and on the advantages of gourmandism, including its influence on marital happiness discourses on obesity and its cure and on the calamity of thinness, particularly in women, with prescriptions for fattening them up Brillat-Savarin's twenty famous aphorisms, including, "Tell me what you eat, and I shall tell you what you are." A work spiced with style and wisdom, The Physiology of Taste remains among the most comprehensive, stimulating, and enjoyable works ever published on the subject of the senses and their pleasures. Epicureans by vocation and avocation will want this beautiful hardcover edition for their reference shelves. This elegant and witty book is a classic in the grandest sense. Brillat-Savarin set out to write about food and cookery, but his interests and enthusiasms ranged so widely over matters of the human spirit that they could hardly be contained, and his work-here in its greatest translation-sits on the shelf of masterpieces of world literature. As translator, M.F.K. Fisher proved to be Brillat-Savarin's twentieth-century spiritual companion. Her lively footnotes and commentaries constitute nearly a quarter of the text, a seductive dialogue of romance between two great lovers of life and style. Its treasures include: observations on feasting and fasting and on the advantages of gourmandism, including its influence on marital happiness analysis and definition of the senses, with a gastronomical test to measure the degree of one's gift for taste discourses on obesity and its cure and on the calamity of thinness, particularly in women, with prescriptions for fattening them up talk of truffles and their possible erotic effect, of coffee and its stimulative powers, of chocolate, and omelets, and eels Brillat-Savarin's twenty famous aphorisms, including, "Tell me what you eat, and I shall tell you what you are." a philosophic survey of the history of cooking anecdotes of unforgettable meals and the stratagems by which they were obtained, elaborate practical jokes, and culinary challenges met and surmounted.

Review
I absolutely adore M.F.K. Fisher. I read her books over and over and delight in them every time. She had such great things to say about 'The Physiology of Taste.' and such reguard for Brillat-Savarin's wit that I couldn't wait to read her translation of his book. Instead of great wit, I felt it was the musing of a man who was a bit of a snob when it came to food. He clearly thinks himself superior to all others in matters of taste and is not afraid to let you know it. This was a great disappointment.

The previous reviewer has it exactly right. This is a book of meditations on the pleasures of food. It is written by a man in whose company it would have been a great pleasure to eat and drink. It is written for people who have the capacity to taste and rejoice in tasting. It is translated by the most original food writer of the 20th Century, and illustrated (in my edition) by the estimable Wayne Thiebaud. What's the point of a book of meditations? In this case, it's to provoke your appetite and deepen your pleasures in satisfying that appetite. I recommend a page or two after dinner, at least three nights a week and washed down with good red wine. Lynn Hoffman author ofThe New Short Course in Wine

Gastronomy, in strict definition, studies the culture of food. Therefore, the Physiology of Taste, unlike a myriad of other volumes, stands out in it's attention to all aspects of gastronomical study and understanding. Not only it is incredibly detailed in an eloquent exploration of Sicilian history but compliments this journey with relevant recipes and gastronomical description. At the heart of the matter lies the subtlety with which the author connects the text and taste to indulge any person interested in the true depth of Sicily.

How can an evangelist convert a hardboiled sophisticate? Why does a POW sign a "confession" that he knows is false? How is a criminal pressured into admitting his guilt? Do the evangelist, the POW's captor, and the policeman use similar methods to gain their ends? These and other compelling questions are discussed in the definitive work by William Sargant, who for many years until his death in 1988 was a leading physician in psychological medicine. Sargant spells out and illustrates the basic techniques used by evangelists, psychiatrists, and brain-washers to disperse the patterns of belief and behavior already established in the minds of their hearers, and to substitute new patterns for them.

Review
This particular book is the best book I have come across on the fascinating subject of brainwashing and thought control. If you are interested in the aforementioned topics, I suggest that you choose this book first. I wish more books would come out on brainwashing and thought control. But for now, we are limited to a few choices. I found this book much more interesting than "Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism: A Study of Brainwashing in China" (

This book is awesome for the laymen who wants to understand the mind and human / animal behavior. Anyone who wants to know more about how trauma and stress affects the brain should definitely check this book out. After you read this book you will only have more questions. Awesome introduction in to a very important field of science.

Anyone who has ever had a "religious transformation", found themselves under a lot of stress, or acting out of character should read this book. I consider this work about the four basic temperaments first outlined by Hippocrates and later studied by Pavlov in his dogs to be senior in scope to Freud, Jung and the last century of psychobabble. It is a very good foundation for beginning the study of brainwashing. It has made me more watchful as to what and whom I will allow into my personal space. It is worth the price to learn how to deal with police and other officials. I bought extra copies for my kids. Here is a good quote from the book, page 264: "The obstacles that the religious or political proselytizer cannot overcome are indifference of detached, controlled and continued amusement on the part of the subject at the efforts being made to break him down, or win him over, or tempt him into argument. The safety of the free world seems therefore to lie in a cultivation not only of courage, moral virture and logic, but of humour: humour which produces the well-balanced state in which emotional excess is laughed at as ugly and wasteful."
