| This will end up being the worst tech book I have every read. The book starts off with lofty goals and ends up achieving none. None of the topics are presented properly. As pointed out in various reviews, chapter 4 is where the nightmare begins. That is not to say that the first three chapters are good, because there's really nothing worth reading in those first few pages.

The authors do NOT do justice to VoIP, to security, and to VoIP security.

Don't waste your money on this book.
BAsed on some good and some bad reviews, I bought the book to see for myself. Let's just say I gave the book away for free, because it's not worth the bookshelf space. If you really know anything about voip security, you'll know this book is a waste. It's not technically wrong, but it's easy to be not wrong when you don't say much. You can learn more from NIST and vendor docs than from this book. My respect for CISSPs dropped after reading their positive reviews of this book.
There are many unanswered questions about VoIP security as there are solutions. Authors James F. Ransome and John Rittinghouse have done an outstanding job of making sure that you will learn a great deal about VoIP and VoIP security issues in this book.

Ransome and Rittinghouse begin this book by discussing why business has migrated to VoIP security and what the realities of making a transition can cost, in terms of both tangible and intangible costs. Next, the authors present the concepts of speech and digital voice to the reader. In addition, the authors give the reader a short history lesson on the evolution of the telephone, the basic components needed to conduct a telephone conversation, and how it all evolved. They also present packet networking and provide an overview of the fundamentals of networking, routing and switching. Then, they introduce the concepts of packetizing voice traffic to accomplish that task. The authors then discuss the quality, reliability, and what can be done to achieve acceptable levels of service for VoIP users. Next, they discuss most of the known security risks present with a VoIP implementation. Then, they provide a summary of best practices for VoIP security. The authors continue with an overview of VoIP security and the law. Finally, they look to the future and discuss the new breed of telephony devices that are quickly becoming mainstream in today's modern company.

With the preceding in mind, the authors have done an excellent job of making this book very useful; and, the subject of integrating VoIP security with existing technology and/or infrastructure more approachable. At the end of the day, you, the reader, will be able to move forward with confidence and a solid understanding of VoIP security as you explore the pitfalls and potential benefits of using VoIP in your organization.
