Many networking books I read (or other books on similarly technical subjects) have a tendency to get bogged down in technical minutia that distracts from the big picture. Not so here. Cormer does an excellent job of getting all the important information out there and explains the common networking protocols, what goes into them, and what they do, without losing the reader. Do not think that this is a superficial view though - I've been in the field for several years now and still use it as a reference on occasion.

Look for the 5th edition of this same book.
4th edition is much older than the newer 5th edition.

I purchased the book titled: Internetworking with TCP/IP Vol.1: Principles, Protocols, and Architecture (4th Edition)for a class. The book arrived ahead of schedule, marking the service amazon provided as second to none. Keep up the great work.
I used a previous edition of this book in graduate school, and it was an excellent resource. Covering a broad range of protocols in a complete but concise manner, it was a single albeit fat volume that was portable and reasonably priced. In comparison to Maniatis and the full version of CP, this edition remains less extensive and less expensive, however in expanding to 2 volumes it has lost the advantage of portability that was (what I thought) really set it apart from others. The price of this edition has also increased to the point where the value of owning a personal copy has become highly questionable.

This is a well-organized, clear, short reference work. Well done

Here is the little red bok.
If the big one is too expensive for you, you can always buy this. You'll find inside all the important protocols and data for molecular biology. It's up to date, and clearly presented.
Try it, and then buy the big one!

Galloway is a triple threat: he's fluent in the esoteric dialects of poststructuralist theory, Internet geekspeak, and network aesthetics. There are plenty of books that try to tackle the art and politics of the Internet age from one of these angles, and a handful that try two--but if you're looking for a three-dimensional treatment of the subject, this is the book for you.

Protocol's subtitle, How Control Exists after Decentralization, gives away Galloway's intention in writing this book, which is to steer a path between the "media are chains" intonations of broadcast media critics and the "networks make us free" hype of Internet evangelists. The fact that he's trying to erect a new theory in this uncharted territory makes this book a valuable contribution to the field.

Sometimes I think he loses his path along the way, as when he veers afield from his focus on networks to apply his ideas to an abstract "biopolitics" or to propose an aesthetic interpretation of Marx. None of these efforts is misguided or irrelevant, and academics with heads in the clouds will probably love these parts. Personally, however, I find Protocol most useful not when it connects one theory to another, but when it connects a theory to a specific technical specification. When Galloway pulls A Thousand Plateaus of the shelf to reveal the politics underlying the Internet's fundamental TCP/IP protocols, he's not just showing off his booklearning--he's upgrading Deleuze and Guattari's theory for use in the field, so we can apply their radical philosophy to the email and chat applications we design and deploy.

If you're a teacher trying to explain the relevance of dead European philosophers to students who'd rather be learning the latest PhotoShop filter or IM client, Protocol is a great translator between these realms. In my classes, I make them read an excerpt on a specific topic--network diagrams, for instance--but I also ask them to analyze the handy tables and photographs Galloway uses to condense and illustrate his points.

(Disclaimer: I know the author from our mutual work in the field of Internet art. That said, I know a lot of the authors of recent books on new media--it's the nature of the field.)

A thought occurs to the author, "human beings have a protocol of sorts that allows them to cooperate.. that keeps them under _control_". He sits around, has some coffee. Eats a bagel. And then it hits him, "Oh my God, the Internet is made up of _computer protocols_!!", and a book is born.

Some of the most interesting work being done today is a result of the cross fertilization of intellectual fields. While this is somewhat of a computer scienct book about the protocols of the internet, the author is a professor of Media Ecology. When he talks of the Internet and its protocols it's almost as if he is using different words.
It has long been a contention of mine that the Internet, both the world wide web and e-mail needs to be view as a transition in media not unlike that brought about by Gutenberg. Here the Internet and its interactions with both people and machines is analyzed like other media. What is the impact on society of a computer virus? How does this differ from the impact of the AIDS virus? And is the computer virus the problem or the weakness of the underlying programs - after all, most viruses use weaknesses in Microsoft Outlook to spread themselves.
We are at a time when the internet is changing our lives. It's good to see that people other than just technologists are looking at where we are going.

I'm currently a doctoral student in a clinical psychology program and had the opportunity to use this manual with one of my clients. It provides an excellent Psychoeducation section with clear rationale for treatment. A simple and clear treatment guideline is described and sufficient examples are provided. Handouts are good and further drive-in the rationale for treatment. Treatment is essentially Exposure and Relapse Prevention with a primarily behavioral slant, but there is a well-developed cognitive component as well. Homework forms are useful, informative, and easy for the client to follow.

My one complaint is that relevant research literature is not cited, or noted for further information. Most people looking at this manual probably already have that information anyway though.

great labs, but too many review questions when the answers are not there, or online to check yourself. Typically we are adults in this class, answers would only help be sure we are not closing the book with the wrong answer written in, and not knowing.
The Routing Protocols and Concepts Labs and Study Guide book has been really helpful for me. As a NetAcad student, I found myself going back and rereading each section online to remember the concepts I learned. This book helped me reinforce my concepts and remember the material covered in this course. With fill-in-the-blanks,matching, and study guides in every chapter, I was able to remember all that I learned. There are also a lot of labs for each chapter, which helped me improve my troubleshooting skills and increase my knowledge. The topologies of the labs were different than the ones you find in the original online NetAcad course, so you get more practice too! You also get a CD with this book which has all the labs and packet tracer files. I brought this book to help me review my vocabulary, practice labs, and get more troubleshooting experience, and this book does just that! I'm satisfied with my purchase.

I have never read such a nice book detailing so much of multi-vendor interoperability issues. It helps you with the protocol knowledge itself and practical knowledge with router configurations. My colleague in PS, Hannes really knows what this is all about.
This book, while pours much theorectical knowledge though, doesn't put me to sleep.
Actually anyone who are interested into large-scale SP network design should read that, at least 3 times. It helps you grow in the telecom field.

Walt is one of the most prolific networking authors in the industry, and Hannes is one of the few true IS-IS experts in the world. Friends and colleagues both, I am delighted that Hannes and Walt have pooled their extensive experience to produce what is destined to be a classic volume for IP engineers. Going far beyond the basics of the protocol, Hannes details the many design touches--both subtle and not so subtle--that go into creating a real-world IS-IS implementation. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand IS-IS at a deep level, from network architects wanting to understand how to design a large-scale IS-IS network to software engineers wanting to write carrier-class IS-IS code to CCIE and JNCIE candidates who need to understand the protocol but have had little opportunity to work with it in a production environment. And despite the technical deep-dive, the book is written in a friendly, readable style with frequent flashes of humor. I cannot over-emphasize the importance of this book to anyone wanting to truly understand IS-IS.

The book is excellent for students and beginners in the field of ultrasound. The information provided is optimal for self-practice and improvement your practical skills as well as theoretical. The only one issue concerning the book is the date of last edition (1999). However, how much it changed? Anyway, I recommend this book to those who are about to start ultrasound scanning.

Great book for the beginner,is a book that you must read if you are learning to scan.

Highly recommened for anyone studying to become a Sonographer in a didactic, clinical or Hospital setting. If you have difficuly making out what you are seeing on the monitor, or knowing what images you should be taking, This book is the ticket. :)
Caution: Not a substitute for formal traninig!.....
