| This book is one I own and the laboratory at which I work has several copies. The book is consisely written with the relevent information shown. The flowcharts aid in the clinicians interpretation of the biochemical condition shown. The book is as it says not comprehensive, but includes the conditions encountered most commonly. The small size enables it to be easily carried and used, unlike some of the more weighter tomes such as Tietz or Kaplan (it is not as thorough and does not pretend to be). But if you want a usuable clinical chemistry interprative book this is the one for you. |

| Biographies of the pioneers of Tropical Medicine were once common but now they are - sadly - rare. Chavez-Carballo has put into perspective the life of the American physician, pathologist, and parasitologist, Samuel Darling. His medical leadership in the Panama Canal Zone from 1905 to 1915 is clearly described in this book. Darling did much of the early experimental work on amebiasis while there as well as studying leprosy, filariasis, tuberculosis, plague, histoplasmosis, and a variety of parasites, including hookworm. In many respects he put the Canal Zone on the medical map of our world when the so-called tropical diseases were being defined and controlled. Chavez-Carballo goes on to describe his years at the Rockefeller Institute from 1915 until 1925 when Darling's expertise was made available to the whole world. Darling was operated on in 1920 for a brain tumor by the neurosurgery pioneer, Walter Dandy, and then returned to work only to be killed in an automobile accident near Beirut when he was working for the Malaria Commission of the League of Nations. He was just 53 years old.

Dr. Chavez-Carballo has researched his subject, Dr. Samuel Darling, extensively, from primary source materials. His style of writing is fluid and one can read this book easily, whether or not one has a background in Medicine or History. This is a useful reference for an academic or a good read for the inquisitive.
