| | By: Pamela Mountbatten, India Hicks ISBN: 1862057591 Publisher: Pavilion Release Date: 28 September, 2007 Bioscience book rank: 179256
| Lord Louis Mountbatten was one of the most interesting people of the 20th Century. This book by his daughter Pamela and her daughter India should not be confused with a scholarly book. It is a fascinating account from the viewpoint of an 18 year old living through some exciting and horrendous times. Lady Pamela and her mother the Vicereine worked far harder among the native peoples than anyone might have expected them so to do.

It would probably be helpful to have some knowledge of the transfer of power in 1947 and the creation of Pakistan. However, I think a person could learn some about that historic occurance by reading this book. The issue of Pakistan is still a plague to many people. Lady Pamela mentions riots in the North West Frontier. This is where there are many difficulties today - 60 years on.

There are pictures in this book from family albums that have not been seen in other books. I would recommend this to anyone with a healthy curiosity about the world.
I anxiously awaited Lady Pamela's book only to be very disappointed in the result. The photos are great as are many of the little memories. An 18 year old, fresh out of school probably isn't the best observer of any events. Her diary entries do add a lot to the personality of the players [for instance her beloved father nagged her to write her diary!] but overall this is a not a very useful book. Campbell-Johnson's "Mission with Mountbatten" is far more useful for a real account of the transfer of power.
I'd been looking forward to reading this book about what is a particularly fascinating period of history about politics in India during the late 1940's. The late Earl Mountbatten's critical role as the last Viceroy of India warrants a well-researched and carefully written book that should have lent a better depth of understanding about this era's significance. Unfortunately, this book fails to deliver such a substantial treatment. While I have great respect for the late Earl and his Wife, Lady Edwina and the entire Mountbatten Family, I cannot recommend this particular book about this august family. The book relys primarily on the diary entries of Lady Pamela Mountbatten which she made at age eighteen during her months in India with her Father and Mother. Additional information explaining more about highly complex historic and political issues is neither contained, nor is this book substantive with details. Unless you are interested in what the Mountbattens had at lunch, who they met on a given day and various "tea-time" social chatter about historic personages, you will be disappointed with this superficial treatment. This book is more of a family photo albumn, and therefore, best classified as a "coffee-table book." I respect Lady Mountbatten for her effort, however, this book should have been cemented with more factual and historical details along with better editing worthy of a monumental era this book fails to address. |

| "Exquisite" is the word that first comes to my mind when considering how to describe this perfect book. I'm not a South Carolinian, don't know much about the Lowcountry, but these photographs are visual poetry, and Teresa Bruce's narrative is not only superb writing but the necessary deft and delicate touch for framing these images. Holding this book in my hands I find myself longing for my own sense of place.
This gentle book is filled with images and words as timeless as the land upon which they are based... a quiet meditation for the heart and soul... the reader will be richly rewarded ... |

| Based on this book I wrote my own version of web server in C.

The book gives great insight into the mechanisms on which the Web works and is a valuable tool for anyone trying to do web traffic management or a small embedded web server. Plus nothing is more 1337 than to telnet into a port 80 and surf with self written HTTP headers
This is a nearly perfect book both for learning HTTP and for an HTTP reference. HTTP is a small, simple protocol, and this is reflected in this book's small size. Great sequence diagrams illustrate the basic HTTP transaction which is detailed in less than ten small pages. And you will probably soon find yourself with several post-it bookmarks or dog-eared pages.
The book could use an explanation of HTTP proxies and gateways and a list of common user-agents. But any more and it would be too long.
If you develop your own web applications then this book is invaluable! You don't realise that you need it until you know what's in it. An overview of HTTP headers, client methods and server response codes along with URL character and media type tables makes for a great pocket reference!
The O'Reilly pocket references are so concise that they are not really meant for someone who is totally new to the subject. They can however be the ideal way to provide an overview to anyone who wants to know the basics of the topic. |

| In that this was written in 1999, and this is now 2003 - this
book IS well written for anyone that wants to attempt photo
transfer. I've done considerable research on this, read far too
many articles with conflicting information on the process, attempted too many techniques with poor results.
This is exactly as intended - a handbook, it compares the various techniques with results.
Many resources now have websites and there are more products on the market. The biggest hurdle between 1999 and 2003 is the digital camera and the advancement of computers and printers. So with today's technology and computer saavy, photo transfer can easily be done and this book is a useful tool for reference and guidelines.
I found this book was not as advertised. I expected a variety of methods and products. Perhaps this is all that was available in 1999. There are a great number of products and techniques currently available that are not mentioned in this supposed "handbook" It containes the same info transfer paper packages contain, a gallery of projects and some bad quilting advice. I was very disappointed.
I purchased this book in the hope of discovering a new way of transferring computer-generated line drawings or pictures onto cloth in order to then embroider the images. I had experimented with two types of computer transfer papers and found them totally unsatisfactory for my needs (stitching on rubberized fabric is not my idea of fine art). This book was simply filled with crafty ideas about what could be done with these unsatisfactorily transferred images ... something even worse than T-shirts. I think the rag dolls with photographs of people's faces said it all. |

| Beautiful. If you are looking for copyright free vintage images this is your book. I can manipulate the designs endlessly on my computer. Just what I was looking for to use in scrapbooking and embroidery. |

| I read this book and I am quite satisfied and glad someone has done the research and expressed it so eloquently. I am a seasoned investigative reporter in the natural health care field and I have met, personally, individuals with such chronic illnesses as terminal Cancer, Lupus, Aids, Diabetes,Asthma, MS, etc., recovering their health, many of them in as little as three weeks. These transfer factors are not curing anything but merely enhancing the human (and animal) immune system which in turn does what it is supposed to do: Protect us from opportunistic invaders such as viruses, bacterias, fungi and parasites. If anyone is interested in translating it into Spanish and Portuguese, please, contact me at ([...]) conveniently. I would heartily recommend it to everybody, specially to those folks with family history of chronic illnesses.
THIS BOOK ON TRANSFER FACTORS IS WELL DOCUMENTED SOLID SCIENCE WRITTEN IN AN EASY TO READ AND ORGANIZED FORM . THE INFORMATION MADE AVAILABLE BY DR. WHITE MAY PROVE INVALUABLE TO THOSE WITH CHROINC ILLNESSES AND THOSE WANTING TO KEEP THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEM FUNTIONING AT ITS' PEAK. THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR ALL HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS.
This book has been extremely important for me in so many ways! Thank you Dr. White for taking the time to share this information with us! My only hope is that this book be translated in Spanish, as I know many people in the Hispanic and Latin American countries would benefit greatly from this information. Please contact me (lcolon@ohio4life.com) as soon as you translate this book into Spanish, I will buy many of them! Thank you Amazon!! |

| This product is pretty awesome. I downloaded a beautiful family tree template, imported it to Photoshop, added my family's names in the blank lines and printed. It came out beautiful. Be forewarned that you need some kind of imaging software like Photoshop to add your own text. For another project, I created an imovie of photos and stories and just dragged the many beautiful vintage images from the disk into my project and it really enhanced the overall look. Nice!
My sister & I took a week off of work & started our geneology scrapbook! With this book the creative juices just flowed!
Thank you,
Linda & Carole
Pictures are not 100% quality, but they are better like in:

| Really nice, the CD lets you pick up the elements you want and use them.
smooth glossy prints though, so the CD does come in handy. As is probably true of the originals, you can see the pixels in the prints sometimes.

The instant memories French pages book has thicker cardstock glossy pages, and slightly higher resolution photos.
This entire series of books "Memories of a Lifetime" is remarkable!! You get ready to use pages for scrapbooking or other craft projects - PLUS, you get a CD in the back of each one with all of the images contained in the books. You can reprint each page exactly as it appears in the book OR you can print the separate components that make up each collage pictured in the book. I have eleven of these books and plan to buy the others. They are amazing to work with. The images are very good quality and are all COPYRIGHT FREE, making them great for resale projects. I just can't say enough about how wonderful these books are. They are well worth the cost.
This book has great color photos of vintage birds and butterflies. It is easy to use and with the cd you can make them any size you want. |
