Product Description

New scientific approaches have dramatically evolved in the decade since The Physiology of Fishes was first published. With the genomic revolution and a heightened understanding of molecular biology, we now have the tools and the knowledge to apply a fresh approach to the study of fishes. Consequently, The Physiology of Fishes, Third Edition is not merely another updating, but rather an entire reworking of the original. To satisfy that need for a fresh approach, the editors have employed a new set of expert contributors steeped in the very latest research; their contemporary perspective pervades the entire text. In addition to new chapters on gas transport, temperature physiology, and stress, as well as one dedicated to functional genomics, readers will discover that many of these new contributors approach their material with a contemporary molecular perspective. While much of the material is new, the editors have completely adhered to the original's style in creating a text that continues to be highly readable and perpetually insightful in bridging the gap between pure and applied science. The Physiology of Fishes, Third Edition, completely updated with a molecular perspective, continues to be regarded as the best single-volume general reference on all major areas of research in fish physiology. The Physiology of Fishes, Third Edition provides background information for advanced students as well as material of interest to marine and fisheries biologists, ichthyologists, and comparative physiologists looking to differentiate between the physiological strategies unique to fishes, and those shared with other organisms. Features: · Adds a section on New Technologies, with chapters on mutagenesis, functional genomics, and cell culture and stem cells · Provides an international perspective with the contributions of expert authors from six countries · Allows researchers to springboard in almost any direction with an extremely extensive bibliography · Includes sixteen new full color plates to go with the book's 150 illustrations · Offers state-of-the-art ecological and molecular approaches

Review
Excellent resource for a very hard subject. Written well. It really helps you to be prepared for exams. If you are a serious student you don't want to miss this study guide. Buy it used and save!

There are a few comments I have...first, I find the workbook very helpful in understanding each chapter of the text. I use it every week and it helped me get an A in Anatomy I. If you read the text then do all the related pages in the workbook, your grade will show it. Trust me. That said, the book is riddled with errors and typos to be on the lookout for. The nerve chapters were the worst. It seemed as if the further the proofreader got into the book, the worse the errors became. Wrong answers can be found in places and some answers are given vs. a fill-choice, for example. It's odd, I know. It's not too much to expect near perfection in this type of item, I think, given the subject matter. Still, I think it is a valuable addition to the text. I would give it 5 stars but all the typos are too much to overlook. I should note that I don't think Tortora is the author, I think it is another person who is listed on the bottom of the cover, but this is based on the Tortora text.

I ordered this book for school. Haven't used it much.

Product Description

Book Description Anatomy and Physiology eighth edition was designed to help students develop a solid, basic understanding of anatomy and physiology without an encyclopedic presentation of detail. Great care has been taken to select important concepts and to carefully describe the anatomy of cells, organs, and organ systems. The basic recipe that has been followed for eight editions of this text is to combine clear and accurate descriptions of anatomy with precise explanations of how structures function and examples of how they work together to maintain life. To emphasize the concepts of anatomy and physiology, the authors provide explanations of how the systems respond to aging, changes in physical activity, and disease, with a special focus on homeostasis and the regulatory mechanisms that maintain it. Timely and interesting examples demonstrate the application of knowledge in a clinical context.

This is a study guide only, not the text book. Very handy if you are working along side the textbook.

Even though this item was not what i needed (through no fault of the seller). I was very satisfied with how fast I received this book and in very good condition.
