As a neurology resident, I find this book to be extraordinarily helpful. It is, as the title of this review suggests, the first text I consult for any neuropathology question. It is also an outstanding resource for concise summaries of the clinicopathological hallmarks of a wide variety of conditions.
The book contains numerous high-quality photographs of gross anatomical pathology and histopathology. The text is well-written, clear and concise. There are a number of handy summary tables in each section. The overall layout of the book is clear, aesthetically pleasing, and visually appealing. The color coding of different sections is helpful in reviewing a given topic, and the index is complete.
Some previous reviews suggested that bibliographic references could be more complete. While this is true, I find it to be a minor point in such an otherwise outstanding text. For comprehensive treatment of any given subject, other, more detailed textbooks are available, but few can rival the clarity of text and quality of pictures in Ellison et al.
From the perspective of an academic neurologist in training, this is the one neuropathology book I want to have on my bookshelf. It is an outstanding contribution to the field.

I am a first year medical student and this was the required textbook for our neuroscience class. This is quite possibly the worst textbook I have ever encountered. The book is full of inconsistencies and incorrect information. The way the material is presented is very confusing and the text is poorly written at best. Moreover, the book lacks key information that is tested on boards and clinically relevent. Furthermore the diagrams are confusing and poorly drawn. Save your money and DO NOT buy this book.

I have used this book as the required textbook for the Neuroscience courses I teach for students studying to become Doctors of Chiropractic. The structure of this book into horizontal levels of the nervous system, and longitudinal systems is extremely helpful for the person developing a clinical thought process for diagnosis. The text is easy to read and understand, and the clinical cases are helpful in applying the knowledge. This text makes learning the nervous system fun and interesting!

This book was absolutely awesome! I loved it! The 'systems and levels' approach is super and really helpful when it comes to clinical problems. At the end of each chapter there is a quiz on relevant clinical and basic science details. Overall - helpful and fun to read!

The photos of the gross pathology is excellent. Itis only gross like the title states. The book reminded me of a National Geographic, mostly photos and captions but little text. All photos are on fresh tissue and we receive all our placentas fixed but it is good nonetheless. For micro, the AFIP book on placental pathology is a great adjunct.
