Case Studies in Immunology, Fifth Edition, cites major topics of immunology as the background to a selection of real clinical cases that serve to reinforce and extend the basic science. This new edition vividly illustrates the importance of an understanding of immunology in diagnosis and therapy. As well as being a valuable review aid, Case Studies in Immunology introduces in a clinical setting the major common disorders of immunity, including hypersensitivity types I-IV and autoimmune disorders such as lupus and multiple sclerosis. It also describes and explains the consequences of some of the most important immune deficiencies. Each case history is preceded by basic scientific facts essential to understanding the immunology behind the disease or disorder. An end-of-case summary, questions, and discussion points finish each case. Case Studies in Immunology can be used as a stand-alone book, or as a clinical companion alongside Immunobiology, Sixth Edition (ISBN 0-8153-4101-6) and The Immune System, Second Edition (ISBN 0-8153-4093-1). Key Features: Contains FIVE new cases bringing the total number of cases included to 47: Hereditary Periodic Fever Syndromes; Interleukin Receptor-associated Kinase Deficiency; Common Variable Immunodeficiency; Immune Dysregulation, Polyendocrinopathy, Enteropathy, X-linked Disease; Celiac Disease. Each case describes real events and symptoms from case histories, ensuring that the reader is presented with, assesses, and evaluates a realistic clinical situation. Full-color illustrations, photographs, and micrographs throughout complement the text. Contains helpful case summary notes in margin. Cases end with a discussion and question section; this useful pedagogic tool is designed to highlight lessons learned from individual cases. Can be used as a clinical companion to Immunobiology, Sixth Edition, and The Immune System, Second Edition.
Review This book is a great companion to Janeway's Immunobiology! It allows you to read real life cases that relate to the material you are learning about in Immunology. Great Buy:)
Not what I expected. It was not written the way other "case" oriented texts are in my opinion.
Considering the serious dearth of well-written text companions and the prevalence of badly assorted notes in MS these days--this book is genius. If you want a good overview of disease causes and states, along with questions engineered to make you think (not deliberately trick you), then this is a solid immunology companion. Ignore that other reviewer.

Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Immunology is a brand-new addition to the internationally best-selling Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series. This volume offers a highly visual presentation of essential immunology material, with all the popular features of the series: over 300 full-color annotated illustrations, an outline format, chapter summaries, review questions, and case studies that link basic science to real-life clinical situations. Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Immunology can be used as a review text for a short immunology course, or paired with Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Microbiology for a combined microbiology/immunology course.
Review Though I have had a module on Immunology as a part of Biochemistry in medical school, my essential knowledge of Immunology had all but flown out the window when I picked up this book. It was an excellent re-introduction to the subject.
The text was simple and clear. I whizzed through the entire book in a week and was able to retain a vast number of important concepts because of the book's amusing and colourful diagrams. The accompanying explanations were lucid and easy to understand. The book makes very few assumptions about the reader's prior experience with Immunology. Jargon, when used, is amply explained and illustrated. Though its labeled a review, I used it as a textbook. It's a nice starting point for someone with little or no exposure to Immunology.
Thus, I would highly recommend Lippincott's Illustrated Review in Immunology
a) as an introductory/basic text.
b) to anyone looking for a fun but good introduction to Immunology
c) to clinicians who want an essential grasp of the subject but have very little time or energy.
d) as a starting point for generating interesting ideas in interdisciplinary research involving Immunology for researchers whose primary field of research is not Immunology.
I am a trained / board-certified pediatrican, and like most doctors have found that residency and practice have distanced me from the basics. I've enjoyed reviewing these "1st year" texts to help provide a more solid foundation for my clinical practice. Great review, very nice illustrations, succinct.
Well written and with concise diagrams. Does a nice job of covering the pertinent material without going into so much detail you lose the forest for the trees. I'd have given it 5 stars if there were a comprehensive test at the end, but even as-is I'd buy it again.
Extensively updated, with new contributors, brilliant new illustrations and a wealth of supporting material online, this 7th edition offers you a carefully structured approach to learning the building blocks of the immune system as well as initiation and actions of the immune response. The website which accompanies this text gives access to all the images in the book, up to 20 detailed animation sequences (which link to further supporting text, illustrations, molecular models and video clips), 8 lectures which explain how the immune system responds to different infections or to tissue grafts, and a test bank of 300 USMLE-style questions. * Includes "Critical Thinking Boxes" which encourage you to "think immunologically" and help you test your own understanding of material. * Provides extensive additional material online. * Incorporates clinical cases at the end of chapters to give you a realistic clinical context in which to anchor your understanding of immunology. * Uses high-yield-style chapter summaries to allow you a quick and effective way to double check all key concepts. * Strengthened chapter opening objectives give a clearer idea of what you should know by the end of each chapter.
Review This is an excellent book on the subject. The only catch for me is that, if you are abolutely new to immunology, this book might be a little confusing at first. You have to be able to understand some basic terminology to work with this book, once you have it going through the book is absolutely pain free.
The text is confusing, very baddly structured and hard to read. Because of the many different authors, the text is not concise. The diagrams and tables are often unprecise, leaving you with even more questions instead of answers. The book is a absolutely not the wright choice for learning immunology. For that I recomend Alberts: MBOC (immunology chapters) and Abbas 5th ed., which are much better books.
I READ THIS EDITION IN CHINA PUBLISHED...DO YOU THINK STUDY IMMUNOLOGY?GOOD CHOICE THIS BOOK...

Review The book is organized into sections such as autoimmunity and immunization and within those sections there are clinical cases. Each clinical case is dealt with in detail. Clinical cases make the book more medically oriented and help retain the information. There are multiple choice problems at the end of the book for each section.
As an allergy/immunology fellow trying to digest all the information in Abbas and Janeway as it pertains to my patients clinically, I needed a source that helped my brain put it all together. I first noticed this book in my university bookstore and, my burgeoning collection of books be damned, decided to give it a look. I very quickly realized this would be an instrumental book in my learning about clinical issues in immunology, particularly the immunodeficiencies. From the big hitters like SCID to the minutia of innate immunity like TLR4 deficiency - it's all there - and presented in a concise, interesting case-based approach, with beautiful multi-color photographs and diagrams. After looking the book over, other fellows in my program have also purchased this book. I use this book regularly when I want to better understand and synthesize the material I am reading in my Abbas textbook.
My complaints with this book are minor. For one, as the previous reviewer said, it's a first-and-only 2006 edition so far. (Not a problem just yet, though.) Second, each case presentation is followed up with "Group Discussion" questions, which are supposed to stimulate thoughts about the case. The problem is, these questions many times give away the etiology of the case, which ruins the suspense! Finally, the pages themselves are slightly thin, so heavy highlighting (guilty as charged) will tend to bleed through the pages a little, but not much. Again, these are all very minor complaints.
Other than that, I highly, highly recommend this book. If you are a med student, resident, fellow, or even attending seeking a great case-based approach to better learning/solidifying your clinical knowledge of immunology, this is your book. I love it.
This book is a wonderful tool for Medical Immunology. My second year course at medical school runs only two weeks and there are so many informations and so many concepts to digest. At the beginning I was very skeptical about buying the book because its a very new book( first and only edition, from 2006) and there is no written review as I am the first person to writte this review on Amazon. It first start by discussing every necessary information to understand each concept then it move over to talk about clinical cases related to each concept. It also go to the very bottom of each condition and speculate concisely on the informations necessary we need to understand. For exemple ADA deficiency is a subtype of the wide range of SCIDs and in our notes there are no much infos about ADA and you really need to go back to the biochem notes to clearly understand the mechanism of ADA which will be very hard to do w/in two weeks. And the authors clearly break down the facts about ADA by stating on page 10 w/in a very short paragraph that "..ADA is required for purines metabolism and which is more active in lymphocytes, particularly T lymphocytes. In the absence of this enzyme, toxic metabolites accumulate and inhibit DNA synthesis so proliferation does not occur in response to polyclonal activators". They first save me a trip to last year biochem notes which are accross my table on the living room then, they break down why exactly ADA deficiency inhibit polyclonal activation. Great book I would recommend to any medical student for the Immuno class.

Review Is a book that I use to teach inmunology to basic science students in medical school, and has great ilustrations which you can download from its site. I recommend it to students and teachers.
the book was in great condition and the delivery was very fast. the book is brand new just like they said it would be.
Nice update on immunology that includes more recent findings at the molecular/cellular level. This is a more general, broad review of the field that takes you to where immunologists are focusing their efforts today. A good example is the chapter on vaccines and vaccines in development. However, if I were someone who was needing a textbook to review medical immunology for a licensing exam, this is not the book to use. This text is more appropriate for graduate students or others engaged in research who want a more detailed overview of the field.
Don?t panic! "Crash Course" is here?that perfect set of lecture notes which no student ever really has the time to compile. Review Immunology for Medical Students is a good overall resource but leaves you a little fuzzy about detail and scope. Overarching principles are presented clearly, but the text doesn't elaborate enough on important specifics such as VDJ recombination in lymphocytes and cytokine function. This text is insufficient for the current medical school course I am taking and wouldn't even have been adequate for the undergraduate immunology course I took a few years ago. Janeway's Immunobiology gives you a much better understanding of the topics, though it does probably go too far to the other side in providing detail.
The book is concise and easy to follow. It contains a lot of background information, in format of inserted boxes, on diseases related to the immune system. The information about immunology is NOT thorough with details. Neither is the presentation of (immuno)pathology. But should be adequate for medical students.
I bought this book for first year dental. It does a good job explaining basic concepts. There are nice, detailed pictures throughout and is very "readable". This is a small book (about 1.5" thick) and gives a good foundation for understanding immunology. I can't, however, agree with the "for Medical Students" portion of the title. If you're looking for something more detailed, check out Robbins.
The most concise, comprehensive, and up-to-date medical microbiology & immunology review! Gives students the high-yield information they need to prepare for the USMLE Step 1 and course exams. Completely updated throughout, the new edition covers developments in HIV, hepatitis, smallpox, SARS, and more. Features case discussions, USMLE-style questions, and a USMLE-style practice exam.
Review The immunology section of this book is the most convoluted reading I have had in all my readings for the step 1. Frankly, the figures are far superior in explaining what the author is trying to convey. Maybe this book was helpful for others but it just frustrated me and did not expand any more than what was already more concisely described in first aid. Bottom line, not worth the time.
the immunlogy section is extra ordinary with concise yet comprehensive ! it simplified not only for usmle but also for medical carrier, so it should study first before the other topics.
I think the book needs more thorough answers for usmle questions as most of us purchase for usmle reviews not for text !
I love this book but the reason i gave this book 4 stars is just because they didn't bother to correct some mistakes of the seventh edition. In this edition (eighth), on page 41 (Chapter 7) Botton note says: Pseudomonas aeruginosa {endotoxin} has the same mode of action. Refering to Diphtheria toxin. It should be {exotoxin}. Another example (to show you a few) is in the same chapter on page 43 table 7-13, it says:
Nervous system
Gram-positive rods:
Clostridium tetani>>>>inhibit acetylcholine release
Clostridium botulinum>>>>inhibit glycine release
As you can see they are mismatched.
So this book is almost perfect, excellent contents but with a few mistakes in some concepts.
