The book is a collection of short chapters summarizing apoptosis and cancer related proteins and genes. As a newcomer to the field (I work in cell signaling in yeast) it helped me to get the bearings to go into pubmed and other databases and ask the right questions. However, information-wise it wasn't very usefull, in part because of the shalow treatment but also because many chapters assumed a relatively high familiarity with the matter being treated. If you are a newby like me, this book won't provide you a coherent picture of the area, just some pointers to literature. If you are an expert, I don't see how would you benefit from this book. A point aside: the writting is not very good. In fact, some sections are very bad written with contradictions, incomplete, and with confusing reasoning. This book is too expensive for what it provides. I am giving it two starts because at least I was able to use as a guide to find good and more complete reviews in the existing literature.

A must for graduate students and postdocs in the field. Excellent style of narration, well-written and very lucid. Upto date with current research findings. An excellent start-up for beginners in the field.

This is the best available review of the subject of cell death. It is both comprehensive and thorough including both vertebrate and invertebrate animals as well as plants It covers cell death as part of development, the cell cycle, the immune system and many diseases including cancer, CNS and myocardial ischemia and Alzheimer's disease. It also includes thoughtful analyses of evolution and death in single-celled organisms. The authors of individual chapters are experts in their fields and the editors have done a noteworthy task in organizing the book into a coherent whole. It is indispensable for students, fellows and senior investigators interested in the subject.
