Review
I love this book. The way it's written makes it easy to understand (well, not easy). The diagrams are great. The glossary is helpful. Overall, I think it is a great textbook and one that I will refer back to often.

I found the book to be okay- obviously depends on your needs. I purchased it as a requirement in a class- and used it mosely as a supplementary source.

This book makes the grade! And it was in excellent shape! I would buy from this seller again, and I would recommend it!

Product Description

The aim of this book is to be a core textbook of anatomy and physiology in childbearing. Written to present childbearing in the context of changes to non-pregnant physiology; therefore, both anatomy and physiology, their changes in pregnancy, and pathophysiology are all described. The book is divided into four sections - preconception, pregnancy, labour and puerperium - and it places childbearing in a total biological context so that concepts are drawn from disciplines such as evolution, ecology, biochemistry and cell biology. At all times, the text is related to practice and care giving. * Written by a teacher/practitioner of midwifery with many years' experience of teaching this subject. * Emphasises the links between knowledge and practice * Text is well-designed and easy to read. * Incorporates recent medical practice in caring for women and babies with problems. * Places childbearing in a biological context to allow depth without denigrating social sciences! ' contribution to care.

Product Description

The reorganized and newly revised Children?s Exercise Physiology, Second Edition, presents the most up-to-date research, methodology, and approaches related to children?s physiologic responses to exercise. The book examines not only the current major issues that separate children from adults, but also the underlying mechanisms of these differences. Readers will learn what makes children different from adults physiologically?such as size, biochemical differences, neuromuscular differences, and lack of sexual and hormonal maturation?and the reasons for these differences. Those involved with young athletes, disease management, and health promotion will gain valuable insight into the physiologic determinants of exercise performance. Children?s exercise physiology is a fast-moving field. In the eight years since the first edition of this book was published, much new information has surfaced. This streamlined new edition contains 13 instead of 15 chapters, an introduction, and updated features: · Chapter objectives, discussion questions and research directions, and a glossary of terms promote learning. · A reorganized table of contents improves the flow from chapter to chapter. · A new final chapter covers the role of the central nervous system. Also included is in-depth discussion of the determinants of aerobic fitness and VO2 kinetics and the significance of maximal aerobic power in children. With improved chapters on thermoregulation and metabolic and endocrinologic responses to exercise, you can be confident you?re getting the latest information with Children?s Exercise Physiology, Second Edition.

Everything you need to know about Physiology...at a Glance! Whether you are studying a physiology course as part of a degree in physiology or biomedical sciences, or are a medical student or junior doctor, this is the revision aid that you have been waiting for. Better than before, the second edition of Physiology at a Glance is in full colour with an MCQ self-assessment section, a new table of normal physiological values and updates in a number of key areas. The text and diagrams work brilliantly throughout the whole book, which is helpfully set out around the body systems: - Muscles - Cardiovascular - Respiratory - Renal - The gut and metabolism - Endocrinology and reproduction - The sensory and motor systems Each section has its own introduction and covers all key components. That means from the muscle and its contraction to the control of metabolic fuels, and from renal filtration to the control of breathing, you have everything you need on physiology in one place. But don't just take our word for it...look inside and make the most of Physiology at a Glance.

Review
Unfortunately, we have reached a point in time where some individuals desire to move to the next level without adequate preparation. I have observed this tendency in a number of the reviews covering various disciplines. You may be able to pilot a Piper Cub but this does not mean that you can pilot a DC-10. If you understand that physiology is an integrated course requiring some preparation in biology, biochemistry (not a lot), and general chemistry; with this text your future in physiology is indeed bright! Otherwise, consider another discipline. I use(legally)some of the flowcharts and concept maps (in Silverthorn's book) in my general chemistry and general biochemistry courses. My students find them of great value! I also team teach a course in physiology for undergraduates. I am currently lobbying for switch to the Silverthorn text. Each chapter ends with a summary and questions that are divided into levels. For examle, in Chapter 2 of the second edition the questions are divided into the following levels: (a) Reviewing Facts and Terms, (b) Reviewing Concepts, (c) Problem Solving, and (d) Quantitative Problems. In addition, the student can explore further by visiting the Silverthorn Companion Website. The book is indeed integrated! Eventhough physiology is the main focus, biochemistry, cell biolgy , membranes, etc., have been skillfully included in a manner that enhance rather than distract from the subject matter. The figures are simple but present clearly the intended message! There is currently a third edition of the text which I intend to purchase out of curiosity. I am anxious to discover if the second editon can be improved. If you wish to learn relevant and integrated physiology, buy this book now!

excellent text! Dr. Dee does a great job at explaining the integration of the body's systems. easy to read text, though not overly simplified; wonderful flow charts & diagrams (these are what got me an A in the class seeing as how i'm a visual learner); "running problems" through out the chapters that test your knowledge along the way. i also highly recommend purchasing/using the accompanying CD-ROM-- very helpful.

This book has nothing intergrated in it. This woman who claims to write the best physiology textbooks around must be lying. Her book is [not good]. It leaves out too many details, has a bunch of senseless flow charts that tell you nothing and provides no explanation. I have a copy of her book and it is thinnner the most physiology textbooks. I wonder why its thinner then most other physiology textbooks? Well its because she does not take time to explain the physiology of the human body. She maybe a good teacher but she can't write a textbook for anything. A 10 year old child can write a better physiology textbook. I would not buy this book at all. Bad book! You want a good physiology and anatomy textbook? I recommend Hole's anatomy and physiology textbook. Hole's anatomy and physiology textbook makes Dr. Silverthorn's textbook look like something you clean your car windows with.

Con: poorly organized subsections > Pro: good details There are many details that are covered but the book goes into different ideas in less logical progression. I frequently find myself rearranging my notes juxtaposing ideas in the chapters.

I did not really care much for how this book was written. I have read better books but if you do not have a choice (instructor requires it) do your best.
