| I was a computer engineering major with a great desire to work in the BioMedical world but I did not know much about Human Physiology.

I was advised by my professors to read this book and I can say that is one of the easiest to read Human Physiology books out there. Even though I didn't know much about human physiology, I found it easy to understand basic concepts and this book helps a lot with illustrations, simple exercises to perform at the end of each chapter, and an understandable language throughout the book.

I am sure it is not an upper level Human Physiology book, but if you are new to the Human Physiology, this is the book you are looking for to get started.
This book states clearly in the preface it is NOT meant to be an advanced molecular physiology text. I am neither a doctor nor a scientist, just an interested mature student of biology, and this book is exactly what I was looking for. Physiology texts seem to be either sophmoric, very basic overviews or dense comprehensive surveys used as reference by researchers / professionals. This book, to me, is unique in providing depth and detail missing from basic texts, without being overwhelmed by minutia only selectively interesting. Highly recommended for the curious who feel their intelligence is being insulted by most introductory physiology texts.
Dr. Arthur Guyton and Dr. John Hall fail in offering a comprehensive molecular understanding of physiology. Although the general presentation of subjects is decent, it does not offer a thorough understanding of molecular events that occur to create what is observed macroscopically. The diagrams are weak utilizing ancient graphs that do not serve to clarify difficult points, and the book is in desparate need of some schematics and flow charts. Tip to Guyton and Hall: today's medical students need more than just a cursory glance at the molecular basis of physiology. And I would suggest to those reading to check out Berne and Levy and Ganong, the latter of which offers up much more detail than Guyton despite being a review text. |

| Covers a wealth of topics in a readable style with a well-organized format. Various sections deal with different largely independant subjects (Oxygen, Food & Energy, Temperature, & Water). Animals have found a plethora of different solutions for the many problems facing them, and while not ever one is covered, most of them are. The treatment of the osmoregulation was great (one of the reasons I got the book), as were the sections on the biomechanics of the animal world. I particularly liked the sections on bouancy control in marine animals, as well as the comparisions through the book on living in air verses water (very well done). The final part covers movement, information, & integration, and tries to pack a lot of material into perhaps too small a volume, but that's my only problem. And realisticly you have to stop writing a book somewhere, or you end up with a multi-volume set; Knut Schmidt-Nielson has done an excellent job of providing the basics at an advanced undergraduate level while making it interesting enough for almost anyone.
Animal physiology might be understood as a study which lead to our understanding on how animal strugle to survive in their particular environment and for its existence. The book try to explain the concept in such a way that even students with very limited understanding on physic and chemistry could grasp the main ideas. This is very useful for the student and also for the teacher.
November 1, 1999 edy -
As an undergraduate, I used this book during my first animal physiology course. I found the book to be very dry and uninteresting. The material in the book was easy to read, perhaps too basic. I felt that at times there were gaps in the explanations. |

| The book is well illustrated and well linked into case studies for medical students. It appears that the book was focused for a medical students. this can be irritating as pathology and science students use the book, and as much as the case studies are interesting, a more molecular approach occasionally would have made a more dynamic book. The book is wonderful and easy to use, a sensational book on all other points.
As good as any physiology book can be. It's just as boring as the rest of them! |

| This book is incredible! It is a detailed anatomy and physiology text, but applied to childbearing. So it covers the major body systems, but talks about how childbearing affects them also. Then it goes into the physiology of birth and its complications- just incredible. I recommend this to every midwifery student out there, and midwives as well! |

| This laboratory manual is the perfect follow-up to Marieb's 6th Edition for many, many reasons. It not only goes into greater detail about material presented in the book with suggested lab exercises, but also successfully breaks down all the "fluff" into an understandable format. Utilizing the effectiveness of the PhysioEX CD-ROM and the many detailed diagrams which come in a massive abundance, this lab manual is perfectly suitable for anyone looking for an extra reference source to use. Overall there are 46 different exercises which closely mirror the progressing content of the book, along with 46 more practice exercises that're really quizzes over the covered material. The many highlighted phrases and bolded words really help to point out what is most crucial to memorize and (as I've found after taking my first test) really are a big help. All in all I'd have to say this lab manual is nothing short of spectacular - from the way it meticulously guides the student through the actual lab step by step, to the way the information is presented in an understandable manner. The price is pretty reasonable, however the only advice I do have for potential buyers is to try and buy a hardback copy if available. The one I own that came with my text is a spiral-bound paperback and is very susceptible to damage. Nevertheless, if you're not able to find a hardback copy I'd still recommend this to anyone taking Anatomy & Physiology simply for its priceless information. |

| I ordered a book late on January (Friday) 7, 2005 at night and received it just on time on Monday 01/10/2005. Just when my classes started, I was very glad that this company does what they promise. Thanks. |

| This is not a very expensive text book for it's category. All the same it is a well written book by a reputable author and staff. The book demands that you pay full attention to every word in it's text. I mean that the text is written in a concise manner by a professional for the novice. Attention to detail is of utmost importance when you are studying. A solid basic knowledge of first year anatomy and physiology is essential. It wouldn't hurt to have your A&P text beside you. The author assumes that the student knows the basics and does not go into basic discussions but builds on each topic. Understand that this is a challenging text book pulling together all facets of A&P with full emphasis on Respiratory Care.
I personally find this text book a pleasant challenge. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal here is to be capable of keeping someone breathing. After all if you can't breath nothing else matters!
This book is really helpful if you're just starting out in Respiratory Therapy, the illusrations are great. The book is easy to read and understand. Great reference book. There are charts and quick references you can either cut out of the book or photo copy and have as a handy pocket guide. |
