This book is great to use if you want to review the lessons you have learned. This is your guide during or right after you have finished studying the parent text, as your private tutor, and for easier absorption of the information...

It is good for reviewing the content you have learned.

This book is a rather excellent book for its price; images
are clear and informative. I purchased this book on a recommendation from my Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy instructor (college level).

He said it was the best book he had seen at such a low cost. And, I agree to that point and in the value of the text.

However, be aware that this book comes LOOSELEAF and THREE-HOLE PUNCHED. It is not a meer paperback bound book; it is NOT BOUND AT ALL. You must place it in a binder to keep it together. Would have preferred a bound text, but the publisher only offer's those to college instructors.

I used this atlas for my college Anatomy and Physiology lab and found the pictures to be quite clear and informative. This is a definite must buy. If you want to know the type of questions asked on Anatomy and Physiology college test, get the following:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Volume 1: ISBN 0971999619) (Volume 2: ISBN; 0971999627)
Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology (ISBN: 0971999694)
These last three books really helped me with getting an A in my college anatomy and physiology classes. The Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology is great because it condenses a lot of the information in textbooks into a right to the point format without all the fluff and it's easy to understand.

We just completed using this text in a study group setting. I have about 25 years of cardiovascular pathophysiology background but had never read through this book in detail so I looked forward to reading it. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. Physiology, especially cardiovascular physiology, is a logical discipline. Heart Physiology, however, is not written in a logical fashion in many places, especially in the organ physiology and pathophysiology sections. In fact, in places the presentation borders on being incoherent. Material is repeated and sometimes this information is contradictory. Some material in the pathophysiology sections is just plain wrong and in others is misleading. Needless to say I am currently searching for a replacement for next year's group.

This book is perfect for the young cardiac physiologist. My interests are concentrated on the metabolism of the heart and while the Author has spent many years of research on glucose metabolism this book gives an excellent broad based understanding on heart physiology. It is considered the "bible" in the lab I work in. Well recommended to undergraduate as well as postgraduate students looking for clear explanations on different concepts and theories regarding the heart.

This book is so plagued by errors that I wonder whether the author knows even the basics of physiology. Use the "Look Inside" feature on Amazon, where the first few pages are available to view. Notice one of the first points that the book makes is that "The Na+/K+ ATP-ase generates high intracellular Na+ concentrations." This is, of course, absurd, as the ATP-ase pumps sodium out of the cell. Given that this atrocity carried over from the book's first edition, I would avoid this book at all costs.

Instead, I recommend the BRS review book by Constanzo or the new Elsevier's Integrated Physiology.

people always recommend the brs, however, I felt that I need to read another review book to enhance my understanding of this subject. Therefore, I picked this book. And I am actually surprised that I am the first one to write a review. and it was published in 2003! This is 2007 already. (I didn't know that my review was published under the 2005 second edition, but the one that I read was the first edition.)

Anyway, I haven't finished reading, and it seems to be an ok book. sometimes, it has less information than the BRS book which could be good or bad. however, I have two problems which I felt the need to write them down just in case I may forget about them in the future.

1. The way he writes sometimes is confusing, hard to understand. For example, on page 157, he wrote:"Resorption of bone by osteoclasts is dependent on an increased H concentration in the resorption zone and an increased release of lysosomal enzymes to promote breakdown of the bone matrix." And that is one long sentence which made for one paragraph!

I just found another one on page 48, "This response, called cushing' phenomenon, is caused by cerebral ischemic stimulation of vasomotor regions in the medulla that help maintain cerebral blood flow in the face of increased resistance caused by expanding intracranial tumors."

I had to read those several times, and it got me frustrated, because it is not easy to understand especially when i am studying late at night, when I am already tired. Now I just realized why my reading is not fast enough, it was partly because of the way he writes the book. Another reason that I picked this book, because it seems to have less information than the BRS book. However, the BRS sometimes has a little too much information, and it gets boring quick. So now I am studying those two books together, pick on a chapter and see which one is better written, and just read that particular chapter.

2. on page 190-191, he wrote:" if the head is rotated to the left, both eyes move to the right." however, on page 191, the picture has "head rotates to right, with a big arrow pointing toward right." So as you can see, it is confusing. You are reading one thing, and the picture is showing you the opposite direction. So that description and the picture only make readers more confused.

Since I haven't finished reading, maybe I should stop reading, I will rate it a 3 as average. One thing that I like is its clinical correlation, that is one thing that I like about the whole series.

Unfortunately, we have reached a point in time where some individuals desire to move to the next level without adequate preparation. I have observed this tendency in a number of the reviews covering various disciplines. You may be able to pilot a Piper Cub but this does not mean that you can pilot a DC-10.

If you understand that physiology is an integrated course requiring some preparation in biology, biochemistry (not a lot), and general chemistry; with this text your future in physiology is indeed bright! Otherwise, consider another discipline. I use(legally)some of the flowcharts and concept maps (in Silverthorn's book) in my general chemistry and general biochemistry courses. My students find them of great value! I also team teach a course in physiology for undergraduates. I am currently lobbying for switch to the Silverthorn text.

Each chapter ends with a summary and questions that are divided into levels. For examle, in Chapter 2 of the second edition the questions are divided into the following levels: (a) Reviewing Facts and Terms, (b) Reviewing Concepts, (c) Problem Solving, and (d) Quantitative Problems. In addition, the student can explore further by visiting the Silverthorn Companion Website.

The book is indeed integrated! Eventhough physiology is the main focus, biochemistry, cell biolgy , membranes, etc., have been skillfully included in a manner that enhance rather than distract from the subject matter. The figures are simple but present clearly the intended message!

There is currently a third edition of the text which I intend to purchase out of curiosity. I am anxious to discover if the second editon can be improved. If you wish to learn relevant and integrated physiology, buy this book now!

excellent text! Dr. Dee does a great job at explaining the integration of the body's systems. easy to read text, though not overly simplified; wonderful flow charts & diagrams (these are what got me an A in the class seeing as how i'm a visual learner); "running problems" through out the chapters that test your knowledge along the way. i also highly recommend purchasing/using the accompanying CD-ROM-- very helpful.

This book has nothing intergrated in it. This woman who claims to write the best physiology textbooks around must be lying.
Her book is [not good]. It leaves out too many details, has a bunch of senseless flow charts that tell you nothing and provides no explanation. I have a copy of her book and it is thinnner the most physiology textbooks. I wonder why its thinner then most other physiology textbooks? Well its because she does not take time to explain the physiology of the human body.
She maybe a good teacher but she can't write a textbook for anything. A 10 year old child can write a better physiology textbook.
I would not buy this book at all. Bad book!
You want a good physiology and anatomy textbook? I recommend Hole's anatomy and physiology textbook. Hole's anatomy and physiology textbook makes Dr. Silverthorn's textbook look like something you clean your car windows with.

this book/monograph is one in a series that includes a title on each of the human body systems. However, it is unique because, as opposed to the other physiology textbooks in this series (i.e. cardiovascular, GI, endocrine, etc.), its content isn't really limited to one body system; In other words, this book covers topics that will pop up again and again as you study each individual organ system. For the most part the authors have made the material clear and easy-to-understand, which is important because the material covered in this textbook will be the foundation that you'll need as u study the rest of human physiology. To be more specific, this book provides extensive coverage on the topic of cell membranes, including subtopics on action potentials and membrane proteins/transporters. There is also a large section devoted to the properties/behavior of cell membranes, including broad concepts like osmosis, diffusion, permeability, gradients, and electrical potentials. The other major topic the authors cover is the section on muscle contraction at the cellular level, which includes the molecular mechanisms as well as the mechanics. Overall this monograph/textbook is well-written, clear, concise, and easy-to-understand. Also this book is relatively short compared to most textbooks on physiology. So like most people, I think one of the huge advantages of this book is that it provides you with the important information that you'll need to know, but it doesn't waste your time by taking up hundreds and hundreds of pages to do so.

I would like to say fews word, this book have not the simple information, but the basic, to advance and complete information ( Top Information ).
for me I have 20 years, of cardiology in Brazil, this book, in not a reviews University, but a complete up date. The last two chapters The Isquemic Heart and Heart Failure, is fantastic !!!
