It presents facts regarding wireless communication, network function and sensor applications implying all seven layers of the OSI model. <br /> <br />It includes a consistent chapter about middleware (session and presentation layer) that i could not find in other similar books. <br /> <br />It may appear boring for those who know much about WSNs. This book is a very good starting point, but is not suitable for those who want to design WSNs. <br /> <br />I give it 4 stars because it has provided me a very good basic knowledge about WSNs. I bought this book in the hope of learning some really concrete stuff about wireless sensor networks. After reading the first chapter, I was already disappointed with the redundancy. After reading the first four chapters, I was disappointed with the redundancy and superficiality of the book. The following chapters I only sampled and the trend of redundancy and superficiality continued. On top of this, the writing style is very boring. This was probably the most boring pseudo-technical book I have read in ages. This book is definitely not worth its considerable high price. And I pity the students that are probably going to be forced to study from it.

He gives a history of various existing wireless networks, where these were not necessarily deployed with an aim for use with sensors. So we see the Aloha network that spans the Hawaiian islands. And how the dispersed nature of the islands led to the development of this network some years ago. <br /> <br />He walks the reader up the protocol stack. For the physical layer to the data link to the network layer. The stack is used as a way to understand the similarities and differences between the various networks. (Think of a periodic table in chemistry, as a good analogy.) <br /> <br />Then, he goes into explanations of topics like antenna design. Very practical for any wireless network.
