| This book is more than necessary for today's society. With so much misinformation about HIV/AIDS, it's important to read a book by someone who deals with the disease everyday and knows exactly what he is talking about. Dr. Savitch has written a book with compassion and understanding about a subject that many people still consider taboo. To think that he is being alarmist or dramatic is irresponsible and unrealistic.
This is an important book. Every person who reads it will surely make changes in his/her behavior and have HIV testing whether or not he/she is in a "risk" group (as Dr. Savitch points we are all in a risk group). If enough of us read this book, perhaps we can force the recreation of a functioning public health system. Thank you, Dr. Savitch.
Dr. Savitch is not simply crying "The Sky is Falling". In addition to this incredibly informative book, he is an infectious disease specialist with 20 years of experience-devoted to caring for HIV/AIDS patients. He knows his subject very well. I think alot of us have been misled by the media into believing that HIV is basically a homosexual issue and that there is a cure that will soon be available. The truth is that we are not even close to a cure. 50% of all reported new cases are women and the statistics of minorities and inner city reported cases are staggering. As of the October 3rd, 2000...HIV is still not reported in California as a 'contagious disease' to the Public Health Department. There is currently a bill up before the Calfornia State Legislature that, if passed, would jail any physician who reports an HIV patient to the Public Health Department. How ludicrous is this. All reported cases now are a consequence of a 10 year delay that follows contracting the HIV virus. In that 10 year period of time, people of all sexual predispositions that are infected with the virus are basically walking around as 'loaded weapons'. Dr. Savitch is advocating mandatory testing for the purpose of performing counseling and doing 'contact tracing'. His call appears idealistic at first. Upon further inspection it is easy to see that if only 20% of the population is able to curtial sexual activity upon notification of carrying the virus- then we will have the time we need to continue to work and find a cure. The Nutcracker is Still Dancing... is a startling account and update of the situation and should be required reading at the primary and secondary grade level. You should read this book. |

| David J Bellis, PhD is professor of public administration and chairman of that department at California State University in San Bernadino, but he is also a former heroin addict. He has been very active over the last 30 years as an academic, as a researcher, as a politician, as a reformer and as a program developer on the issue of drug addition and its treatment and management.
This book has six chapters: introduction to the study, etiology of HIV transmission, heroin and commercial sex work, study methods, comparing Mexican and San Bernardino sex workers, summary with an appendix where you can find the survey questionnaire and an excellent index.
The book is the result of two research projects. One interview study in San Bernadino with 72 female sex workers (FSW) in 1988 and in Mexico (Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez, Ciudad Victoria, Cuernavaca) during 1996-1999 with 102 FSW. In both studies the interview was on site, where the FSW worked and the interview included 48 questions on demographics, types of sexual behavior, types of clients and number served per day, history of STD and HIV infection, condom use and client attitudes towards condoms, alcohol and other drug dependence, criminal history, knowledge and attitudes towards AIDS.
This study showed marked differences between Mexican and American FSW with a much better situation for FSW in Mexico. The women in Mexico have more monthly medical checkups, have been tested monthly for STD as a legal requirement, have been tested for HIV, have sex with fewer clients and mainly with own race or ethnic group, reported that most customers used condoms and wanted that protection, have condoms in their possession, have dependent children and very little intravenous drug abuse. From the study the author recommend for Mexico to reduce or eliminate prostitute health license fees in order to maximize health surveillence, to educate in schools about STD and AIDS and legalize prostitution in controlled settings. For the United States he recommends better HIV/AIDS/STD prevention and treatment programs, free methadone maintenance for heroin addicts, free needle and syringe exchange programs, decriminalize heroin and reform prostitution laws and legalize prostitution.
This is indeed a very interesting book with a healthy and concerned approach to the "oldest trade" in town, which policy makers and administrators should take seriously.

Professor Joav Merrick, MD
Director, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and Medical director, Division for Mental Retardation, Box 1260, IL-91012 Jerusalem, Israel, email: jmerrick@internet-zahav.net
Mohammed Morad, MD
Family physician, Division for Community Health, Ben Gurion University, Box 653, IL-84105 Beer-Sheva, Israel, email: morad-62@barak-online.net |

| While much media coverage is given to statistics about HIV and AIDS in the USA, whether that be medical data now more available to the public, films that document both the Hospice development for the dying as well as the fragile hopes of new medicines and possible vaccines for those living with HIV, or simply coverage of the entertainment industry support during AIDS Walks, Runs, and other Benefit extravaganzas, almost nothing is said about the devastation that this disease has eroded the continent of Africa.
Here in a book that is more devoted to the visual images of patients, families and villages in the shadow of AIDS than to statistical information, the truth becomes more poignant. In a series of interview monologues with some of those affected by this plague the need for world wide attention is apparent. How we can spend billions on wars and exclude the humanitarian needs of those for whom each day is a life and death crisis boggles the mind. Perhaps this informative and tender book will help. Grady Harp, July 05
This book is an illustrated compilation of brief (1-4 paragraph), first-person narratives by victims, family, and workers in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in southern Africa. There are more pages of photos than of text. Photos are well-done and powerful. The book does much to give the reader an insider's view of the AIDS tragedy and its impact at the personal and family level. It does not address the problem analytically at all; you'll need other books for that. This one is like sitting in the waiting room of the HIV clinic, or on the floor of the hut, and talking to the people about their stories.
Mike Blyth--pediatrician in Nigeria
An indepth insight into HIV and AIDS in Africa and done in a way which highlights the positive responses and challenges perceptions of this terrible epedemic . This book is a must for anyone interested in learning more about this subject. |
