| ...can sometimes be a difficult task. Fortunately, the complier(s) of this big book of RFCs have done a great job at presenting the standards, in a single volume so when you are bored on a 6 hour flight, you can catch up on RFC 1617 and pour over the alias object class, or choose another and investigate what that cryptic attribute was *really* created to do, software vendors be damned :)<p>Overall, I think this is a great reference to have if you are an LDAP architect, developer or implementor, although not for the average person who is just looking at getting some knowledge of LDAP on the surface... Exactly what was needed!
It is nice to have all these RFCs(request for comments) in one book to help those who implement not to overlook some aspects of the implementation like say how to store a Java object in ldap directory service hopefully using JNDI and also how to find if your choice of ldap solution is 100% pure ldap. Not to mention understanding the real security of the ldap offered to systems, users and applications. What is the real Enterprise solution. I hoped this protocol has another friendly name like FarLook or WithinLook or even Enterprise Superman. Do not forget to consider the add-on ldap based applications, there are 30+ security apps. Good luck. ldapguru@yahoo.com |

| This is a great book. I am using the knowledge gleaned from this book to manage windows for a product platform using Java to talk directly to the XServer via the protocol. I knew almost nothing about X but had great deal of experience with other UI Toolkits. Within a few months I had a deeper and more satisfying understanding of X and its capabilities. Not for the faint of heart, but perfect for the inquisitive programmer...
This book reveals X at its most raw: the underlying bytestream that is truly X. If you've been confused by GUI toolkits and widgets galore, this book will strip away everything that isn't part of the core concepts that you need to know to understand what happens during an X session.<p>This book is not for the faint of heart, however. If you're wondering about learning how to write an X application, this book is probably not for you. This book is a good reference for implementors of X servers and X libraries; it may also be of some use to advanced X application programmers that need a reference for debugging purposes. |

| An excellent book covering all aspects of the IP protocol. Covers networking concepts and works its way through the OSI layers up to applications running over IP. Includes packet structures of headers and application protocols and outlines the RFC's associtated with each portion of the protocol discussed. This book is a great reference for learning basic to advanced operation of IP and how the various protocols are constructed yet contains enough detail to allow network programmers to write applications that use these protocols. Highly recommended. |
