| Becoming familiar with the drug names, the different classes, and general functions was my biggest challenge. Reading and re-reading Lippincott's and trying to remember the various charts in other review books did not help.

The pictures and associations in this book make it so easy to recall. You do have to learn some associations, but it really does not take much effort since they are so common and they are used repeatedly.

I found this book late in the class, and I wish I had found it sooner. I just took the pharm shelf exam, and 95% of the info. could be found in Phunny Pharm even though it is a little outdated. With a little updating of your own in the margins, you should have the info. you need to do well on the boards. This book will surely help anyone who has trouble memorizing lists of words.
Pharmacology is a hard subject to learn, and you need the right book to learn it, this book is not the one. This book has lots of pharmacology info, however, even though it's a bit fun, it's very hard to get started. Before you begin to remember the stories in this book, you must memorize the characters of each section. Some sections require you to remember over 20 pieces of non-pharmacology info before you get the gist, mostly being sports keywords. Unlike other picture books, this one is entirely black and white and the pictures are boring and mostly just many figures on a sports field. If you using this to take your boards, I find it highly unlikly that during your boards that you will be able to recall over 20 pieces of sports info before remembering what you tried to learn and then apply that to answering the board question. In addition this book has over 1000 obscure short sentences that you are supposed to recall and apply to remember a med. Overall, this book is trying to make you remember way to much obscure and useless information before being able to decide an outcome.
This is indeed an amazing book.

Never have I seen anything like this in literature.

My friend sent it to me from Florida since this book is

not available in India.

The cartoons and the mnemonics are truly fabulous.

If you want to really understand as well as remember

Pharmacology or even teach this subject, then this is the book.

| This book definately takes all the stuff from our big texts and condenses it and makes it much easier to understand. The helpful hints in the margins are great. This is makes pharmacology much easier to apply to clinical. I highly recommend it!
I also purchased Clinical Pharmacology made incredibly easy---have really enjoyed both books.

| Being a pre-med student, I thought this book was excellent in explaining details, especially about pharmacokinetics. The book had too many authors, which led to chapters lacking flow, especially those written by Dr. Dennis Grant and Dr. Jane Mitchell. Otherwise, I recommend it completely. |

| I used this for my med school pharm class. After checking it out repeatedly from the library, I decided to buy it. I liked this more than the Lange pharm chart. If you like charts, this is a great book..very easy to read. I give it 4 stars because it's old (there hasn't been a new version in quite sometime) and also because it's a bit too general for med school class (our class covers much more detail, more drugs that may not be in this book, more effects/side-effects, etc, so i use this book as a starting point to make my own charts). Still, I love this book because it makes it easy to see patterns in a family of drugs. I'd recommend using another book for detail (I like Katzung's Pharmacology Exam & Board Review) and filling in this book as you take the class. I haven't taken boards yet but imagine this will be a good refresher for board prep.
The Pharm Companion is an excellent aid for learning all the pharm you need to know for boards and practice. This book takes everything you need to know and puts it all into simple charts. I've gone through most of the book w/ my notes and I find that the Companion usually reduces a 10 page packet into a one page chart. If you like charts at all, buy this book. It also has handy perforated flash cards in the back. |

| As someone who has studied drug therapy for nearly 30 years, I highly recommend this book. It is concise and well-written and provides the practioner, therapist, and sports enthusiast with important information on medication use and exercise.
I recently read a review in a well-respected journal about drug therapy. Their review summarized this book better than I could as, "reasonably priced and highly recommended for sports clinicans and therapists."
A long awaited and comprehensive reference, Dr. Reents' book covers a wide range of pharmacological agents (prescription and OTC drugs, nutritional supplements, and herbal products), from caffeine in coffee to injectable derivatives of testosterone and androstendione, and their effects on general health, exercise physiology, and atheletic performance. Written for health care professionals, consumers, professional atheletes, and personal trainers, this book will also be a valuable reference for high school and college atheletic coaches wanting accurate information to help young atheletes understand the potential benefits and/or harm these agents may produce as they mature into adulthood.
Of special interest are case studies that describe potential real-life situations, information on what substances are banned by various professional atheletic organizations (e.g., NCAA, USOC), and advice to physicians on counseling atheletes taking prescription medications for legitimate medical conditions. The book contains timely examples of products currently on the market and includes definitions for many "scientific" terms and concepts.
While there is no index (which made finding information on a specific drug or nutritional supplement difficult), the table of contents contians significant detail so as to make locating general topics easy, e.g., the effects of creatine supplements. Nevertheless, Dr. Reents' efforts are to be applauded. This book should be on every atheletic coach's list of "must read" references.
Dr. Stan Reents has to be comended on shedding light on this subject of growing interest. Not only he discusses the effect of commonly used drugs in clincal practice on exercise but he also brings forth the current sceintific evidence on 'performance inhancing' drugs and supplements. The information is of great value to any clincian and sports trainer in helping to seperate the myth from the facts in this rapidly expanding area of supplementation for exericse performance. |
