Review
This is a particularly helpful text to use in "putting the pieces together" in disease processes.

I was a computer engineering major with a great desire to work in the BioMedical world but I did not know much about Human Physiology. I was advised by my professors to read this book and I can say that is one of the easiest to read Human Physiology books out there. Even though I didn't know much about human physiology, I found it easy to understand basic concepts and this book helps a lot with illustrations, simple exercises to perform at the end of each chapter, and an understandable language throughout the book. I am sure it is not an upper level Human Physiology book, but if you are new to the Human Physiology, this is the book you are looking for to get started.

This book states clearly in the preface it is NOT meant to be an advanced molecular physiology text. I am neither a doctor nor a scientist, just an interested mature student of biology, and this book is exactly what I was looking for. Physiology texts seem to be either sophmoric, very basic overviews or dense comprehensive surveys used as reference by researchers / professionals. This book, to me, is unique in providing depth and detail missing from basic texts, without being overwhelmed by minutia only selectively interesting. Highly recommended for the curious who feel their intelligence is being insulted by most introductory physiology texts.

by: Pat Willmer, Graham Stone, Ian Johnston
publisher: Wiley-Blackwell, published: 2004-12-15
ISBN: 1405107243
sales rank: 319078

Product Description

The new and updated edition of this accessible text provides a comprehensive overview of the comparative physiology of animals within an environmental context. Includes two brand new chapters on Nerves and Muscles and the Endocrine System. Discusses both comparative systems physiology and environmental physiology. Analyses and integrates problems and adaptations for each kind of environment: marine, seashore and estuary, freshwater, terrestrial and parasitic. Examines mechanisms and responses beyond physiology. Applies an evolutionary perspective to the analysis of environmental adaptation. Provides modern molecular biology insights into the mechanistic basis of adaptation, and takes the level of analysis beyond the cell to the membrane, enzyme and gene. Incorporates more varied material from a wide range of animal types, with less of a focus purely on terrestrial reptiles, birds and mammals and rather more about the spectacularly successful strategies of invertebrates. Review
Are you working in the area physiological functioning and the comparative adaptations of animals? If you are, this book is for you. Authors Pat Willmer, Graham Stone and Ian A. Johnston, have written an outstanding book that integrates animal physiology into a more holistic approach. Willmer, Stone and Johnston, begin by considering adaptation in relation to selection on phenotypes, as determined by genes and their constituent DNA. Then, they cover the process of adaptation in a suitable molecular context, so that new information on the molecular interactions and genomic changes underlying ecophysiological modification can be easily assimilated as it becomes available. The authors continue by discussing the problems of size and scale. In addition, they also present the mechanisms for keeping volumes and concentrations of biological solutions under control--thus, keeping animal tissues operative, in the face of this fundamental challenge. The authors also examine the problem of animal water balance in terms of the actions , and control, of particular effector organs. Then, the authors discuss metabolism and energy supply. Next, they look at the fundamental design of respiratory systems whereby aerobically respiring animals take up the oxygen they require. Then, the authors review the effects of temperature on animals, and the kinds of adaptation they show to withstand or to counter temperature change. Next, they examine the basic functioning of excitable tissues, and how they permit detection of environmental change, response to it, and indeed learning about it. The authors continue by examining the properties and roles of hormones, especially in relation to the bigger issues of coping with environmental challenges, dealing first with the endocrine systems and component glands in different kinds of animals, then with the various functions that are regulated by specific hormones. In addition, they also examine marine life in general. The authors also discuss seashores and estuaries. Then, the authors discuss the nature and occurrence of fresh water. Next, they cover a range of "aquatic" habitats that are in various ways not strictly within the definitions of marine, littoral, estuarine, or freshwater habitats. Then, the authors cover the essential strategies of the broad range of animals that live in the majority of terrestrial habitats; particularly, in the temperate zones and the humid tropics, where thermal extremes are rarely encountered, and where water balance, though difficult to achieve, is not pushed to the limits for survival. Next, they deal with some special cases of terrestrial life: hot and arid deserts, where the hygrothermal endurance limits of animal residents may be severely tested; polar regions, tundra, and northern coniferous forests, where extreme cold is superimposed on the generality of terrestrial problems; and, montane habitats, where altitude effects may parallel the latitudinal effects at the poles. Finally, the authors survey the departures from a free-living physiology that are associated with a range of types of parasitism. This excellent book also includes both an ecological setting and an appreciation of the range of behavioral responses open to individual animals before specific physiological responses need to come into play. Furthermore, the book has clearly met a need and found a very receptive audience.

This text takes the unique approach of looking at the physiology of animals found in different environments. E.g. one may be interested in the adaptations found in deep sea animals or in intertidal organisms? It is an excellent text with plenty of information to allow one to get a better understanding of the array of physiological adaptations needed. It is also interesting to see how different types of animals have solved the same physiological problem. Overall, it is fascinating reading! Highly recommended. It would be useful for a prospective reader to have some previous knowledge of zoology and physiology before taking on this book.

This atlas is intended to supplement the laboratory course for A&P. It illustrates the body structures as they actually exist so that students will be able to easily recognize the parts when they are dissecting or taking an exam. This particular manual has been a market leader, and this new edition will have the addition of incredible full-color photos throughout, and has many unique features.

Review
It is in good condition but I wish the software would have came with this book.

This atlas is small but packed full of pictures and useful info on A&P. Easy to carry and worth the price to have such an easy to use reference. Sometimes I sell my books after I'm done with them, but not this one!

I had an intense exam on the bones and it helped me prepare for it. I actually passed the test with flying colors. The pictures were great and very detailed. I would recommend this book to anybody.

Review
This book is good value for money. It provides a interesting introduction to physiology. Fundamental concepts of human body functions are covered and the heavy illustrations are both useful and entertaining. In particular, I find the facts of common biological order and disorder helpful to the layperson.

I ordered this book on Feb 3, 2009. Up to March 7, I have not received this book. I believe your order or shipping system need improve.

This book does an OK job of explaining basic physiological concepts. I say OK for two reasons: 1. The author talks to you as though you are a five year-old. Although maybe a cute literary tool at first, this quickly becomes irritating and eventually makes you want to throw the book in disgust. 2. Only a surface level discussion is presented, with very important concepts merely alluded to as opposed to going into sufficient detail. The two most glaring examples for me are the poor discussion of action potentials, and the non-existent discussion of G-protein linked receptors, and subsequent second messengers. In fact, the final exam at the end of the book mentions second messengers as an answer option, despite never being mentioned prior. I guess the author initially included such things, but threw them out to fit in more obnoxious baby talk. There is no reason for this book unless you want a quick refresher on basic concepts. Serious students beware.

This text provides the reader an understanding of the mechanics of the joints with the help of diagrams rather than text. The commentaries are short (on double page spreads); the quality, clarity and simplicity of the drawings and diagrams are such that they could be understood without any verbal explanation. The drawings are unusually clear: everything which could hinder understanding has been removed and one feels that the author has foreseen the difficulties which the student could encounter. Each time a problem arises it is explained by a diagram which, though simplified, is extremely clear.New functional tests for the shoulder, the elbow and the handExplanation of why the forearm has two bonesA logical and mathematical explanation of the so called CODMANN ParadoxNew conceptions of the physiology of the carpusClear explanation of notions as DISI and VISI for the pathology of the carpusNew cotation of the thumb opposition and counter-opposition, presently integrated in the International EvaluationFundamental notion of the complex grip-plus-action, very important for the evaluation of the function of the handSymbolic and affective value of the handA comprehensive board of the motor nerves of the upper limbNew test to detect an ulnar palsy at the forearm

Review
These books by Kapandji are written so that they can be read and understood at a very elementary level, but also tackles very advanced concepts. They also have very good mechanical drawings explaining physiological processes that occur at the joints.

I couldn't wait for this revised version of the Volume One: Upper Limb to be released, and I was not disappointed. Unlike the traditional Kapandji figures, the volume is in full color, but in the same style of illustration as before. In most cases, the color adds to the understanding of the concept and is not just gratuitous. In addition, however, there is much more detailed explanation of the mechanics, more clinical application, and the addition of some intruiging questions in biomechanics such as "Codman's Paradox" and "Why Does the Forearm Have Two Bones?" This is a thoroughly delightful expansion of a work that I first discovered in 1976 and which has changed little since then. The drawings remain incomparably lucid, yet detailed. Interestingly, this edition includes an index, something that has been missing from previous editions of any of the 3 volumes. Yet, there is no bibliography, which was included in the 5th Edition of Volume 2: Lower Limb. My only criticism is that Elsevier has not made a teaching slide set (CD) of the drawings available to those of us who use these in our lectures.

Review
This book is essential if you are studying for your anaesthetic primary exams. It explains respiratory physiology thoroughly, albeit sometimes in too much detail. Excellent graphs.

To clarify: I am a Nurse Anesthetist student with an extensive critical care background. That said, this book does an outstanding job of taking a very complex subject and breaking it into digestible peices. I wish I had read this 10 years ago as my understanding of and care for patients with critical respiratory issues would have been greatly improved. I would recommend this book for anyone who really wants to understand how the respiratory system works from a macro to micro level.

The 5th Edition of this book has been revamped by Dr Lumb to its infinite benefit. Nunn's used to be a book that you waded through after getting the essentials from Wests more concise book. Studying for my anaesthetics primary this year I found the new edition much more readable and with its specialised sections in the rear (pathophysiology and altered physiology) will be a book that I will keep referring to in the furture. The book still is a little irrelevant to me in some of its detail and it can often be difficult to determine the exact point that is trying to be made but the change in editorship has made for a great improvement. One section that puzzles me is the first which seems quite a detailed explaination of atmospherics which has very little relevance to the topic matter in reality.Still an essential for both the trainee and then clinician alike.
