I just purchased the updated 2006 edition from B&N. Although this book is very useful and informative, I must say I have a difficult time understanding all the medical terminology. Eventhough they attempt to give definitions of all the medical terminology, the definition itself is too complicated. I feel like I need to go to medical school to understand this book completely.

Or breastfeeding already? Get this. And get it before you need it, because it may take a while to be delivered. Breastfeeding women are frequently told by health care providers that they must wean to take a particular medication; this is only very rarely true. But you won't be able to know without good information, and this book has the definitive answers.

Also useful during pregnancy. A lot of advice to pregnant women is basically based on the suffer-through-it principle. This book will help you participate in making a safe, informed decision about whether a particular medication is safe enough for you to take.

I received free use of this book online, through Student Consult, for a couple of weeks. After the free trial period I missed the book so much that purchased it. The book itself isn't all that great. The layout is difficult to read and the typeface is pretty small. What I wanted was the online version.

So, after following the instructions Crash Course: Pharm is up on my Student Consult page right next to RR Path and my microbook. The online Crash Course contains the same material as the book but in a more user friendly way. The highlight of this book is the charts and tables that are used to illustrate the difference of drugs within a class. For instance, there is a digram showing where all the major antineoplastics act. I can print off that diagram and write all over it, add other drugs....whatever. Being able to access the entire book online is worth the price.

I am also using a set of pharm cards to review. Between these 2 sources I haven't yet had to dig up the big Lange Katzung. Ask the company for a free trial if you aren't sure. That's what made me buy it.

This book is a one stop shop for Chemists wanting to be familiar with the essentials of Pharmacology. Cannon also adopts the same perspective, always giving stress on the chemical basis of the action of drugs, as well as neurotransmitters, hormones and intracellular signalling molecules. The first part of the book deals with general principles, which Cannon beautifully explains in a nutshell. Topics include the blood-brain barrier, drug receptors, pharmacological assays, metabolic inactivation and modifications of drugs by organs, basic pharmacokinetics, and properties of membranes and cells. The latter part is focused on particular systems. It is especially in discussing the Central Nervous System that the book really shines. Cannon talks in detail about the neurochemistry and physiological action of several important neurotransmitters and their agonists & antagonists. He also discusses the most important diseases arising from malfunctioning of the CNS. The chemistry of addiction also receives due exaplanation. Later chapters include discussions of cardiovascular drugs and drugs which are used to treat Asthma and Allergies.
Pharmacology is a vast science, and it not possible for a utilitarian chemist to work through the grand tomes on the subject to get what he wants. Cannon's book largely remedies this situation, and provides him with the essentials, without overloading him with information. This slim volume is a must on the shelves of Medicinal Chemists, Biochemists and any professional working in, or interested in Drug Design.

Reading this book is much easier after taking the author's course. You get a better feeling for how the book is laid out after listening to the author's lecture style. An organic chemist by training, the author naturally gears this book to the organic chemist. He gives just enough physiology to understand the pharmacology behind it. The book follows his lecture course fairly well with more in-depth discussion on topics of interest. A standard reference text that should be in any chemists' library starting out in the pharmaceutical field.

it's what I needed for theRespiratory program that I'm in. Shipment was fast. I'm very pleased

This is a very good book for RT students. I like its organization and presentation. It is by far the best book available for basic pharmacology in terms of coverage and readability. I agree with another reviewer in that the students are actually reading the chapters on their own. The review questions in the book are nice but missing the answer key (at least for the instructors). The online review questions are mostly recall. I hope in the next edition, more application and clinical questions would be developed for the book and online review. Instead of references within the text, it uses a bibliography format at the end of the book. However, this is more than adequate for an introductory course. Finally, I know it can be "painful" to switch textbooks but this new book is definitely worthy of your time and effort. If you supplement the book with other resources available (printed or web-based), it can be as complete as any other pharmacology books currently available.

Good for respiratory therapy students- not useful for students in pharmacy or medicine. Too many incorrect statements and important omissions. Very superficial coverage of non-pulmonary topics.

There are so few books (unfortunately due to severely limited research) that provide a pharmacological view. This book is interesting in that it points out the most common receptor sites aswell as the agonists(stimulate the receptor) and antagonists(block the receptor). Much more research needs to be done but until then this book shines for the information it provides during these dark ages of thought. Good information, wish there was more...
