Product Description
Preparing for the USMLE can be a stressful and time consuming task for any medical student. The key elements of a successful review program are clarity, brevity and memory-assisting consistency. High yield information is the name of the game in preparing for exams. The author of Passing the USMLE: Basic Science has taken great pains to make complicated ideas as simple as possible and to incorporate the basic science of medicine with the clinical applications of patient care. Data is presented so the reader takes away as much as possible from every word, every sentence, and every minute spent studying. Maximum retention of information is assured through the use of bulleted lists, charts, tables, and full color clinical photographs.

Review
This book is only sufficient for the less weighted items for the USMLE boards. There is just not enough depth for a lot of the things covered by the boards. Also, there are quite a few errors in here, and no errata published by Princeton Review. That means that everything written in it must be checked elsewhere and confirmed before it is useful. On the plus side, for a broad and nonspecific overview of topics like gross anatomy, genetics and immunology, the book did a good job. However, they billed themselves as a comprehensive study guide, and they just fell short of that claim.
This book is absolutely full of mistakes, I would not rely on it at all!
This is a great book to review material, as it explains concepts so well. It also covers strictly all the clinical points of the basic sciences, and not facts that are really not needed. You must learn to use it with your coursework, however, as it is a bit deficient. I am using it side by side with my first aid, and a couple other review books. It's framework, however, makes studying for the boards a lot easier to mentally grasp, as the systems and the most high yield concepts are already there for you. It's length is almost perfect, as you have already covered so much material in your courses. This gives you quite a bit of time to do as many questions for the boards as possible. I would definitely recommend this book as a starter for USMLE study. For the next edition, I recommend making the book atleast 1200 to 1500 pages, to make up for the deficiencies, and so no other review books are needed.

Review
This is a great little rview for the Boards- its more detailed than the First Aid but a lot shorter than the Kaplan Pharm Review Book. You would notice that these are the same authors from the major pharm books that are out there. I am a fan of Trevor's teaching techniques so if you are familiar with his style than this is a great addition. However, this is not a book you want if you are starting out trying to learn pharm- in that sense you want the details that are required for you in medical classes- I would go with Lippincott.
if you already have katzung, there's no need for this book. sure you can use it for the shelves but first aid and the high yield drugs in the back of katzung is much better alternative. But if u can do all three, good. For the step 1 first aid is more than adequate,i used first aid for the boards after i found out that katzung was too detailed. i ended up with a score of 229/95.
WOW.. this is definately one of the best books I have seen to review pharmacology. I have already tried a mock USMLE test and found that I was lacking in the pharmacology section , and went to study from the major LANGE text , and covered the hypertension drugs in five really long chapters, then I read the same drugs from this book, and I pretty much got the same amount of info. This book is not a referrance to study from , but it absolutely the best memory jogger I have seen yet for this subject. It is clear , well edited , pointing out the important things you need to keep in mind, and is nice and thin so that it could be used to cram from only a few days before the exam. Those of you considering sitting the step 1 exam, trust me you will need this book, it will save you a lot of work, reading , and anxiety !

Product Description
The purpose of this book is to help you spend less time memorizing all the details you will need to do well on the CCS (Computer-based Case Simulations) questions in your exam. This exam requires significant time, energy and concentration, and the mnemonics provided in this book will allow you to remember all the steps for managing a patient's care in an emergency room, inpatient or office setting so that you can answer questions quickly and accurately-saving your precious time and energy by helping you better manage the examination experience. Efficiency is key to a successful examination experience, so familiarity with the USMLE CD software will be crucial. Know the normal values and their cut-off points for the most widely used lab tests and don't type everything out in the ordering window. Inputting the first 3 to 5 letters will bring up matching terms for you to select. You can also use abbreviations, like TSH and CXR instead of thyroid stimulating hormones and chest X-ray as another way to save time when answering questions. There may be a few cases on the exam that you have never encountered, but don't panic; just follow the steps and manage the patient in the appropriate setting (the office or emergency room)-ordering labs, imaging and meds as you go. If you handle the patients appropriately you will be fine, even if your final diagnosis is not correct or it seems that the patient's condition deteriorates. The CSS portion of the exam is more about memorization than being a good doctor. Memorization of the steps you must follow to treat each patient in each case is of primary importance. The methods I have described in this book will help you master these steps so that you can execute them efficiently and, paired with diligent practice using the software provided by the USMLE, will contribute greatly to your success on the CCS questions.

I recommend this book. I read almost all other sorces for step 3 CCS but this book is the best avilable sorce for CCS now.
I am a resident, really hard to find time to read every day, this book helped me to menorize every thing with simple mnemonics. I could practice every cases as much as I want on the blanks forms and compaire with standard answers. This book value is much much more than the price, if you compaire it with other online sorces, you will find how much are diferent. I passed the exam with 92 and almost all my CCS cases were in this book, my performance on CCS was much better than MCQ part. Good luck to you all
waste of time and money , just stick to First Aid, UW and Consult this book is totally nonsense

Awesome for USMLE review. But the best review is actually knowing it in the first place.
Contrary to one review, the questions are incredibly well thought out, cover a wide range of HIGH-YIELD material, and are set up exactly like the real step 3 questions (COMLEX and USMLE). CLEAR explanations of why each answer is right or wrong solidifying your learning.
Given the typical time crunch we experience as interns prepping for Step 3, this book was an adequate resource for the exam. It is nicely divided into sections which allows you to focus your preparation. I'm a pediatrics intern and was able to focus on internal medicine and Og/Gyn sections (things I haven't dealt with as a resident). The format was similar to the exam; however, I found the sample questions on the USMLE CD to be much closer to the real thing. I used this text and Crush and felt adequately prepared. No surprises on the exam.

I used this book in the last two weeks before the exam...some of the questions were kinda deceptive - they appeared easier than they actually were. But the selling point for me was that it was a full exam so I simulated the exam conditions to give me some practice with my timing etc. I used this book together with the NMS review book and the Kaplan Q-book, and I did enough questions to get me a 97 on the exam.
This is the worst test book I've seen. It is a waste of money, but more important, a waste of time. The only thing similar to the step 2 exam is the number of questions divided in 8 blocks. The questions are poorly written and the explanations are lame. If you are preparing for the step 2, try the Mock exam by Brochert or the Q book from Kaplan (or even better the simulated step 2 CD-ROM).
This book is GOOD practice test for Step 2. It's set up just like the Step 2 exam with 8 blocks of 50 questions. Every question is a clinical vignette and the format of the questions is very typical of Step 2, i.e., "What is the diagnosis?" and "What is the next step?" It's definitely worth the the $25 that amazon is selling it for.
