| The term 'systems biology' was coined to describe the field of scientific inquiry which takes a global approach to the understanding of cells and the elucidation of biological processes and mechanisms. It is an integrated approach that brings together and leverages theoretical, experimental, and computational approaches in order to establish connections among important molecules or groups of molecules in order to aid the eventual mechanistic explanation of cellular processes and systems.
<br />
<br />This is a field that simply did not exist a decade ago, and is the result of the advent of genome sequencing and associated technologies. This has spurred the development of specialized equipment and sophisticated computer programs that have basically developed into its own specialty as well as affecting virtually all aspects of biology.
<br />
<br />This series of two books cover the present state of the art in the field by enlisting specialist writers from literally around the world to contribute chapters based on their own expertise and research. As such these volumes are well in advance of anything that can be written by any single individual.

<br />Isidore Rigoutsos is manager of Bioinformatics and Pattern Discovery at IBM.
<br />
<br />Gregory Stephanopoulos is Professor of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at MIT. |

"...a unique and most welcome source of information and inspiration for anyone interested in genomics, from advanced undergraduates to experienced researchers." --Wilfried W. de Jong, Ph.D., Department of Biochemistry, University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands
"Handbook of Comparative Genomics is a pioneering composition illuminating the emerging scientific discipline of comparative evolutionary genomics. Professors Cecilia Saccone and Graziano Pesole have not only provided us with a treasure trove of molecular, structural and compositional information, but more importantly, they have produced a scholarly exegesis of empirical, statistical, bioinformatical, computational, and evolutionary methodology. The Handbook contains both introductory and advanced material, and manages to maintain a degree of lucidity that is as rare as it is indispensable in scientific discourse." (Dan Graur, Ph.D., Gordon Professor of Life Sciences, Tel Aviv University) |

| "Typically a reader obtains their first impression of a new book by identifying the authors, the title and the blurb on the back, in that order, and to follow this algorithm would be to have the reader expect that the book is about statistical analysis in microarray experiments, alone. Even a cursory examination of the table of contents and skimming chapters and the color plates might perpetuate this view, but actually the book is much more than that"<br>From- Cancer Biology and Therapy<p>Reviewed by- Michael N.
